I just finished the latest Bosch series.

I did enjoy it, but it seemed a bit scattergun with its storylines, as if the writers didn't believe any supported a whole series and tried running a lot and never really full developed any.

Welliver is great as Bosch, I can't picture anyone else when I read the books now smile

Very much so; no criticism of the TV series, but the books, like all books, have better insights into his thinking and the subtleties.

The downside of them being so good, not just the Bosch books, is that I only have 3 of his books left to read so I am having to ration them. He has a new one out that I haven't bought yet, waiting for it to appear in the charity shops somewhere when they re open.

Anyone recommend anything similar to Bosch?

I've watched the Wire and Justified.

Getting on a bit now but Homicide: Life on the Street was excellent.

For books, I was always a big fan of Ed McBain novels, but they're not really the same as Bosch although the 'solving a crime' aspect is.

However, I think the poster who asked for anything similar was looking for TV programmes and, aside from the likes of Morse/Lewis/Endeavour it's hard to think of many detective TV series currently.

I always used to really enjoy Hill Street Blues (It was a long time ago, though!) and the Shield as someone mentioned is top notch if you've not seen it.

Bordertown is a good Finnish detective show on Netflix.
Also Borderliner , Norwegian police detective show. Can’t mind who showed it tho.

Former LAPD detective. There is a base story that runs through the book but threaded through that are stories associated with each officer. Some are so outlandish they can only be true and what he does is go to police stations and gets the officers to tell "cop stories" and he changes a few details and uts them in the book.
The Choirboys is one that was made into a film that was so appalling he made the film compnay take his name off the credits.
The Hollywood Crows series is a good place to start.
Hollywood station is the first one I think.
Lines and shadows is another good one.

Before Bosch we watched Rogue and thought that was good.

Thanks, will search those out when the shops reopen, pretty soon I hope, my supply of unread books is starting to diminish quite quickly thanks to this lockdown.

One of the things I like about Michael Connelly is the way he has developed the Bosch and Micky Haller characters in separate books and then combines them in his later stories. Unbeknown to them initially they turn out to be half brothers in the early books and eventually Bosch works with Haller when he leaves the police.

I came across this on Prime about a month ago after watching the last episode of Man in The High Castle (what a rubbish ending that had!). I’m just starting season 5 and have to say I’m finding it excellent. I think I might pick up
the books post season 7 and see how they compare. Very impressed.
