I'm completely dumbfounded by all the negativity towards Mr Sheeran. He is a popular guy both this side and States State of the pond. He is clearly liked by a large percentage of the world given his album sales and sell out concerts. And I for one think his music is good. What would happen if Vinnie Jones wanted a roll in GoT? For godsake he used to be a footballer! I would say that Sheeran is going to start looking for new avenues to expand on the talent he clearly possesses. The role was in context and played to his strengths and he did it well. And it certainly wasn't as bad as Beckham in the latest King Arthur movie!
+1Can't say I'm a big fan of his music, but it's alright. Certainly a lot worse out there. Plus he comes across as a nice bloke, relatively down to earth considering he's one of the most famous people/highest earners on the planet. Good luck to him.
His cameo in GoT was a bit surreal, but that's mainly because the whole scene was probably the first in 6 seasons where people were actually being 'nice' to each other

I agree. The whole scene clanged and Sheeran was just the icing on the weirdness cake.It actually reminded me of this scene in a way.

it isn't the first time a musical cameo has appeared.
Ed Sheeran,
Sigur Ros were the purple wedding band
and Mastodon appeared as wildlings a couple of seasons ago.
I know Mastodon appeared as DB Weiss is a big fan of the band.
agree that there was a 'WTF?' moment when they appeared/
TBH I know how ES is however I haven't got a scooby how he looks - ditto Mastodon so nothing dragged me out of the momentEd Sheeran,

I'm a bit curious as to why having a singer in it dragged everyone out of the story....fair enough he was singing but it's not as if he whipped a guitar out and started playing one of his own songs...
How is it different to having Wilko Johnson in the early seasons.? Or any of the easily recognisable faces for that matter...I'm sure I even saw Sean Bean in it once.....
I think it's because he's out of context a bit, I like cameos like that, as long as their performance is on par. How is it different to having Wilko Johnson in the early seasons.? Or any of the easily recognisable faces for that matter...I'm sure I even saw Sean Bean in it once.....
I think the issue is that it is different from Sean Bean - the cast are professional actors, cast for the part, presumably because they are the best at it.
However, you know that Ed Sheeran was chosen for a cameo because he was Ed Sheeran. I believe its what marketing types call a 'surprise and delight' feature.
I think that's why it's jarring - it feels a touch like he was shoe-horned in because he was who he was and make the audience go 'oooh look Ed Sheeran'- rather than there was an actual requirement he could fulfil that another actor couldn't, or that the scene wouldn't have been effective without the character.
Ultimately it feels like it was an indulgence on behalf of the producers/star - rather than something added because someone thought it would make it better.
Also - I'm certain this must have been mentioned before multiple times - but I only just discovered that The Hound used to work in a Supermarket.
On which note....anyone else surprised Simon Pegg hasn't shoe-horned his way into this...seems right up his street

For me it was a few reasons. How is it different to having Wilko Johnson in the early seasons.? Or any of the easily recognisable faces for that matter...I'm sure I even saw Sean Bean in it once.....
First and foremost, like a lot of GoT fans I all over the pre-premier hype, a lot of which revolved around his cameo, so instead of being completely immersed in the story, I was waiting for him to turn up.
Secondly the scene felt shoehorned in, in a season premier full of revelations and pivotal moments, Ayra stopping for a quick BBQ and a chinwag with a couple of what would usually be extras, was like hitting the pause button.
Thirdly, unlike most cameos that are 'blink and you'll miss it' as some star walks past the screen covered in make-up and wearing a cloak, there he was, front and centre looking exactly like, well Ed Sheeran's head on a Solders body, in his usual hairstyle (okay he's not exactly a Hugo Boss man, but still) using his usual voice - it was Ed Sheeran, no one else.
Most annoying I think is that it was completely unnecessary. They don’t need a cheap cameo to get people to watch, it’s probably the biggest TV show in the world, I don’t think they did, but if they needed a quick scene to show that the Lannister Solders are just normal kids, then it didn’t need to be in the season premier and it didn’t need Ed Sheeran to do it.
Someone important in Game of Thorns wanted Ed to sing at his daughter’s birthday or something.
I've just watched the Always Sunny in Philadelphia episode where Dave and Dan cameo. Very funny, took me by surprise as I didn't expect them at all.
Cameos can work! Ed Sheeran didn't quite work for me. If he was playing a bard or something in a bar she was passing sure, but the soldier thing played a bit weird and to have Sheeran next to Ayra made the scene a bit jarring. The song is stuck in my head though.

maisie williams is a massive fan apparently.

She had just done her speech about letting guests in to share your food and then murdering them at the Freys, then she gets invited in to share their food and she's thinking about murdering them. It's a turn about face situation and she soon realises they are not all bad people, just normal people who want to go home, maybe that changes her mind about going to Kings Landing and turns around goes north to Winterfell instead. Or maybe later someone she cares about gets brutally murdered by one of those Lannister soldiers, if only she killed them at the time type of situation. Besides nothing was left out or missed, if that scene had never happened the episode would have been 49 minutes long and not 59.
Not sure if anyone spotted this, quite near the end of first episode, when Sam is collecting the dishes from what looks like prison cells.
An arm shoots out with scaly skin on and ask's "Has the Dragon Queen arrived yet".
It's Jorah Mormont, a great character, wonder how he ended up in the citadel.

A girl sitting next to him keeps arguing with him and undermining his authority.
It's Sansa Stark, a great character, daughter of Ned Stark who's the guy who got his head chopped off in S1. I wonder how she ended up there with them.

It's called vanity, or stunt casting. There is some MMA fighter who wants to be in it. I think the producers are falling foul of the stunt casting a bit. They don't need to, GoT won't lose viewers by sticking to their original credo of casting unknowns. However, you know that Ed Sheeran was chosen for a cameo because he was Ed Sheeran.
