It's called vanity, or stunt casting. There is some MMA fighter who wants to be in it. I think the producers are falling foul of the stunt casting a bit. They don't need to, GoT won't lose viewers by sticking to their original credo of casting unknowns.
Unknowns, like Charles Dance, Sean Bean, Mark Addy, Lena Headey, Ian Glenn and Gwendoline Christie? I agree, a LOT of cast (especially the "kids") have their big break in GoT, but from the older gen there's a lot of accomplished actors in there.

No, some of the names you reference were quite established. I didn't say it was exhaustive, so you don't negate my point, but GoT did cast a lot of unknowns or low profile at the start and at least up until s6, even in comparable parts. That was one of its strengths.I agree, a LOT of cast (especially the "kids") have their big break in GoT, but from the older gen there's a lot of accomplished actors in there.
GoT made Gwen, and made Lena A-list. The original series was built and sold on Sean, and they used Dance and a few others to prop that up, but a lot were jobbing actors, and a lot were unknown, and for a reasonable percentage it was their first job. This was pretty unusual for a flagship HBO show.
Edited for crazy English on the phone.

Not sure if anyone spotted this, quite near the end of first episode, when Sam is collecting the dishes from what looks like prison cells.
An arm shoots out with scaly skin on and ask's "Has the Dragon Queen arrived yet".
It's Jorah Mormont, a great character, wonder how he ended up in the citadel.

The Sheeran scene took me out of the show for a number of reasons..
- When he first appeared the camera lingered on his face for what felt like an eternity, and continued to leer at him after that. It was pure fan service which was odd for GoT (the other notable cameos you had to look for them, they were blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments)
- The whole "it's a new one" about the song was excruciatingly bad dialogue, he might as well have looked down the lens and said that it would be available soon on iTunes.
- Never before in the show, and I imagine after, will there be a scene where a bunch of male soldiers chance upon a girl and play happy families with her. It's not that I need the show to treat every woman brutally for my immersion, but the scene itself stood out as being incongruous with everything that had been previously established.
- Whilst I'm on the subject, a bunch of Lannister soldiers in bumfk nowhere and they're all as fresh faced & clean as if they were inside the city walls. Compare and contrast with the guys that the Hound slaughtered whilst searching for the yellow cloak guy, or even the mooks in the tavern that he and Arya killed.
Basically Sheeran was the most incongruous component in a wholly incongruous scene (and don't give me that "it showed Arya had a compassionate side" crap)

I don't think it was meant to show Arya has a compassionate side, not sure she does have one, I thought it was to show her the error of a rampage of vengeance. Which is a large part of the books. She was still considering killing them near the end. ANd maybe does for all we know.
The thing about the Lannister lads, it is sort of realistic, after all the fights most of the refresh forces will be green boys from the villages, I just found the exposition too heavy handed.

The difference is they are Lannister soldiers they would take more care in their appearance just like all the Lannister soldiers Jamie had with him at Riverrun, "because Laniister" etc..The ones the hound killed (Polliver and the others) were not, they were men-at-arms of house Lorch wearing house Lorch style armour and not caring about condition. Yellow cloak guy and the others were outcasts from the brotherhood without banners.Gassing Station | TV, Film, Video Streaming & Radio | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
