Not seen Atonement, that opening scene looked good though.

I'm looking forward to seeing Dunkirk; I've been longing for a good WW2 movie about the British for many years now, as although there have been many made, the majority (to my knowledge anyway) have been less about the war and more about a love story or somesuch set against the backdrop of the war. (Does anyone know of any good 'modern' movies about us Brits in WW2? Only one I can think of off the top of my head is Age of Heroes, which by no means great was enjoyable enough)

With Nolan behind it I'm confident it will be a visual feast, and its interesting to see him take on a film about real events. I hope there's plenty of action in it!

By coincidence, I've recently read Hugh Sebag-Montefiore's excellent book about Dunkirk, which concentrates on the rearguard action rather than the "little boats". The British Army performed very creditably in difficult circumstances - nothing to be ashamed about at all. If the film is reasonably accurate, the French probably won't be showing it.

I do wonder whether it'll show the various massacres, or whether they'll be ignored for the sake of international relations.

The BBC did a three part mini-series in 2004 with the Wormhoudt massacre depicted in the first episode. All three parts can be watched on youtube - Wormhoudt massacre.

A great performance by Cumberbatch IIRC

Will be interested in seeing this if only for the fact my grandfather was at Dunkirk and didn't make it off the beach. Few years in a prisoner of war camp for him

Unfortunately he died in the 60s before I was born so didn't get first hand from him his experience.

Film may trigger an interest in me finding out more about his story

I would not have though it a very popular event to make people want to see it. Oh look the Germans are giving our chaps a bloody nose, retreat, retreat.
Didn't stop this film being made -

Despite the event being a major defeat for Britain, propaganda turned it into a kind of victory. For years it was spoken of as "The Miracle of Dunkirk".

Christopher Nolan?

Really? Seems an odd choice.
He wrote it, is producing it (with his wife) and is directing it, so it wasn't a choice as such, it's his movie. Presumably he is in the position of being able to make whatever he wants at this stage.

Not sure why it's an odd choice either, I'm sure he wants to stretch his legs a bit further after a couple of sci-fi movies.

Probably my favourite director so can't wait to see this. Interstellar, The Prestige, Dark Knight trilogy and Inception are pretty close to perfection IMO

They were filming some scenes for Dunkirk in Swanage a couple of weeks back, at the steam railway. Apparently Swanage station is standing in for Woking station.
Managed to spot Harry Styles on the other side of town in his Ferrari FF, in a slightly odd shade of metallic maroon (the car, not the former boy band member).

How are they going to pass off his hairstyle as WW2 fashion? Mind you, pop stars being used to pull audiences is nothing new - Johnny Leyton in The Great Escape comes to mind.

There was a time when casting Mark Whalberg in anything would have been met with howls of derision, so this could work

George Chakiris wasn't in "Operation Crossbow"

He was in "633 Squadron"

Correct. I was getting my 1960s schlocky war films mixed up.
