Wow. Just wow. 31 executed and Tonkins found those responsible and called in a airstrike?
There's also a book?
This period is covered pretty well in a book by Max Hastings. There's also a book?

Don't let the title put you off, it's all about the French Resistance and SAS operations hampering the Das Reich's advance on Normandy.

Excellent series. I was hoping they would continue covering more recent events too, given they seem to have been granted unique access by the SAS themselves. An episode on their exploits in the Falklands would have been fascinating, given many of those involved are I presume still alive.

My grandfather was one of these pioneers. SAS Desert Rat. Captured twice, escaped twice.
Would love to be able to find out more about him but his relationship with his daughter (my mother) was not great so difficult to get information.
Thanks for the heads up about this programme , isn't catch up telly truly fantastic ?Would love to be able to find out more about him but his relationship with his daughter (my mother) was not great so difficult to get information.
My Father in law said one day whilst watching Magnum PI that he'd been up in a plane 32 times but had never landed in one & the balls of his feet were well & truly knackered where he couldn't see the ground in the dark kind of says it all really.
Really tough man, loads of medals but never whispered any of the things & atrocities he must have committed & witnessed.
We really have no idea do we, RIP Wally Sadly missed old boy.

great program really showed the true colours of Britishness.
Killing unarmed airman in cold blood?Whilst the murder of 31 SAS men in France was terrible, it really wasn't a lot different to what Mayne did at the Airfield in Africa, years before.
Good to see it didn't pull punches, though and that he was 'rebuked' for overstepping the mark...

They were going to do the same thing in Operation Jericho, quite rightly too. Planes do not fly themselves, not even drones. Whilst the murder of 31 SAS men in France was terrible, it really wasn't a lot different to what Mayne did at the Airfield in Africa, years before.
Good to see it didn't pull punches, though and that he was 'rebuked' for overstepping the mark...

yes, the old saying fight fire with fire, the Nazis/Italians were a killing machine and the commandos did what needed to be done, that is why the British led pioneered this approach and ending up being copied and trained the world over. Whilst the murder of 31 SAS men in France was terrible, it really wasn't a lot different to what Mayne did at the Airfield in Africa, years before.

Shooting people taken hostage is different to killing people in combat, i can't believe that has to explained.
My granddad served with the RAF in Africa and i have his wings, would have loved to know he he heard the stories out there, but unfortunately died 6 months after i was born.

Unfortunately WW2 had extreme brutality on both sides. Just think of the Dresden bombing for instance!
It was a different world to what exists now.
Not really, the world is and always will be brutal. We're completely sanitised to it in the West now.It was a different world to what exists now.
It'll happen again at some point, with even more powerful weapons. Total War demands pure aggression

OK, you're right to some degree. Only need to look to Syria for evidence of this. But in terms of us in the west, I would hope we don't return to the days of mass brutality against innocent civilians. It'll happen again at some point, with even more powerful weapons. Total War demands pure aggression
Apologies for the transgression of this thread!

See the smilie and relax. I was mucking about.
You had a dig at me/Sutton goalkeeper though didn't you... But that's alright no doubt.

Unless you are admitting you are the very same person .
I sent him the pic because it's a picture of the captain of our football team, who I get to spend some time with because we have ties to the same company.
We decided to put to bed the false rumours that he and I are the same person. A picture with Jordan Henderson was a nice way to do it on an LFC thread. It's as simple as that. There's no conspiracy.
I'm sure you'd like to have your picture taken with Lloris.
All the purpleankle and hanging around with men in the gym digs do you no credit. Let's play nicely.
Hope that clears things up.
