AK was already established as a good car/bike builder before GM started & has continued to build vehicles when they weren't filming at the shop.

As for RR his book is a good honest read, basically he was going broke with GM & it was only a last minute decision by Discovery that meant that GM carried on.

He apparently felt like GM was turning into American Chopper big rushed builds, it looks like he & Casey are going their own way.
Aaron has had his own shop for many years. I wonder he only really appeared on GmG when they were filming.

Don't blame him and personally I thought it was a matter of time. Richard comes across as a bit of a pain to work with and AK was the talent. I have someone working with/for me who's equally as pivotal and I gave him shares. What did Richard do with AK? Charge him for the falcon at almost retail price when he wanted to go racing. At that point the writing was on the wall.
I think he's great and will do well producing good quality niche products at a premium. Good luck to him.
On these type of show the stars make money from the TV company, based on how popular they are within the show.

As an example Chumlee on Pawstars is just the hired help, but in reality he makes enough from the show to fund a Rolls Royce (and quite a few other cars).

I suspect AK has made enough from it that he can walk away and do what he wants, without having work for anyone.
Good point. Maybe a mix of the 2?

I can't see Richard coming out the Big Race particularly well either given the rules are; Under 500ci, 66-72 Muscle Cars and Richard or Aaron drive. The Strret Outlaws guys offered them the chance to build a slower car so Richard could drive it and in the end they got a pro drag team in to build the car, bar his guys just doing some camera bits and basic assembly. And he then got a pro driver in anyway. From what I can gather all RR did was turn up the the filming at the track and go home again. The Laughlin team are even posting the car on their social media as their car not as a GM car it's supposed to be!

Sorry , seriously it's tv , he left an American tv series but he's still on it 5 mins after ? And he's accepted a tv challenge from the same channel that makes fast and loud to race someone from street outlaws ! on probably the same tv programme !!!
fast and loud is approaching it's end of natural life , just like American chopper did , its gone the same way and it's in its death throws just like chopper was , discovery will soon be promoting a new format , they are trying with diesel bros

The race was arranged about 4 months before AK left, by which point he'd agreed to drive the Gas Monkey car, then he dropped the bombshell he was leaving. The original plan was for Richard and Aaron to take on Chief and Shawn from Street Outlaws while the rest of the Gas Monkey mechanics took on Farmtruck and Asian in a smaller build off to get more interest from all fans of both shows. Once AK decided to leave the Discovery producers came up with plan B to keep Aaron involved. And as soon as he wasn't involved Richard pretty much washed his hands of actual involvement and ignored the Mega Race rules regarding car and driver...

Ahh , you either work in tv or watch it more than I do , but I stand by what I said , it's all but ran it's natural course. I either miss it now or fall asleep half way through , it's just not very interesting anymore ?

Could there be another side show coming off AK leaving, like Misfit Garage?

That's what many of them do. There was a job advert posted recently for someone to go and join the team, to work from April-October on the TV show and be paid as such, but have to comply with all the rules of making it on the TV etc.

Whereas GMG as an entity, will have several non-TV people working there who just get on with it I would expect?

I don't disagree that Fast and Loud is getting to the end of its life, the bar/random sponsor jollys/tequila ffs! And all the other crap like that has seen to that one. It's a shame it can't just be left about the cars. That's the interesting bit about the show and it just seems to have become the side story. Annoying really.

Ah maybe, but there's leaving and there's leaving - he left GM, but his 'real' job, on Fn'L anyway is 'reality star' which he's still doing - he was in the next scene and will be in the new few episodes at least I'd guess. He may well stay part of Fn'L for years, it could be the best of both worlds, AK making more real world, slow build hot rods. Built like they did back in the 50s making and bodging (in the very broadest sense) parts from different vehicle to make cars faster, lower and cooler.

RRR does the usual silly deadline thing where they spend more time than they probably should fixing the bodywork on an old car before throwing piles and piles of money at it in the form of off the shelf parts and bespoke mounting kits and finish with a great paint job. I'm being massively over cynical, but whilst it's not as bad as American Hot Rod 10 years ago, they evolved into building kit cars of sorts - the fabrication element has been reduced to moaning when they have to make their own mounting kit for the bolt on bits, oh and of course making the bumpers fit tighter. AK was always pushing for more fabrication and innovation, I think RRR and the others were always much happier buying new pattern panels and kits to make it quicker, easier, cheaper - I'm sure due to the size of the industry in the US you can get some great pattern parts, but they're never better than 99% perfect.

Deadlines,what deadlines ?
I put it to you these 2 week,3 week or whatever builds are actually filmed over a much longer period. The fake jeopardy is all for the tv audience.
There's another show just started, can't recall the name off hand, they had a build with a deadline and 4 days before the car was supposed to go to auction it was still an unpainted shell. But of course,it was finished with minutes to spare.
You have to take it all with a pinch of salt.
I've never taken to the bearded one,he's so far up his own arse he pcks his nose from the inside.I quite like RR,he's a character smile

He might mean production deadlines for the tv company, rather than the 'we gotta have this car done in 4 days for Barrett jackson' deadlines that the show tells us about.

I've often wondered why they have so many of their past projects in the shop. The last couple of weeks shows they've had the Hot Wheels truck lurking, and the cheap Model A Tudor build was up on a lift for about 3 series laugh

I liked the cheaper builds they did far more than some of the big budget jobs. I'd love the Pimpala

Just caught up with the latest episode last night. AK resigned because he had his own projects he wanted to concentrate on. Very next scene he agrees to a build-off with another car based reality tv show. This is just as stupid as when RR "fired" a few of his mechanics just for them to go and start their own garage in a building they rent from RR and star in a new TV show that is produced by RR.

I actually think I would rather see a show based on the cars Dennis Collins buys and restores for his own collection.

Anyone catch the new series last night, first one post AK?

usual faux dramatic unobtainable deadlines but it all seems a bit flat and samey. I'll watch some more but rawlins like a bit lost without his wingman and the workshop clearly needs a supervisor.

Yep, its crap, more fake jeapardy, oh my god we're not going to finish it in time ball crap, it was obvious they'd make a Jason the supervisor but he's not a modification expert, he's a concourse restorer, so he'll become the next fall guy for Richards inability to organise a piss up in a brewery and end up leaving, much like Arron. They even changed the voice over bloke for some unknown reason who was a good part of the original...

I watched it they definitely are missing AK his enthusiasm was one of the reasons I watched it, I'll still watch it I hope they do the more simple builds like they used too I think they're the better cars.

Keep it simple stupid as RR would say.
