Anyone watching this?

I must say, if HMS Ocean is the RN's 'flagship', she probably doesn't have the Russian navy quaking in its seaboots.

An aging, breaking down, helicopter carrier, that is crewed by 17 year old girls and others whose idea of a good time is converting their sleeping quarters into what looks like the gayest nightclub in the world (miners' night..), whose old hands talk about how nervous they are to be sailing through the Red Sea.

Surprised the RN allowed them to film this stuff.

Nelson, turn your eye away now.

  • no disrespect intended to the 17 years old girls, I am sure they are keen and motivated and work hard, and good on them for volunteering, but they just don't inspire much confidence

Yeah I've been watching it.

I think it's the big guns and aircraft the Ruskies are supposed to be wary of rather than the girls with the dirty dildos and the boys in the dodgy lock in. I was surprised a bit of bad weather seemed to be an excuse to pack things in though.

Quite enjoying it. Know what you mean, it's not much of an advert.

I have been watching it. I might try and dig out the old tv series "Sailor" instead to help wipe my mind of how lightweight it is.

I wasn't concentrating on it the other night but wondered how if the TV crew left and flew home via Cairo when the entered the Red Sea who was making the rest of the TV programme?

Oh it's on the tube of you - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsdBsiXtXaA&li...
(Ps. tits in the first 3 minutes)

They jumped back on in Oman IIRC with a short line about how, unsurprisingly, nothing significant happened while they were off the ship.

The TV crew left before passing Yemen, and re-joined once the ship arrived in Oman.

Superb, watched the first part on my iPad just now, might just pick up the series on my TV and watch the rest, forgotten what a brilliant piece of TV that was....

Yes I've been watching on catch up. Agree with everything the OP says.

I did have to smile at the H&S sticker on the mounted machine gun couldn't read what it said but I'd guess at something obvious!

Probably something like "Caution, may cause injury"

"Sailor" is what inspired me to join the RN.

If you want a realistic (and very funny) view of life in the Royal Navy, take a few hours and read this thread:

https://www.arrse.co.uk/community/threads/pull-up-...

I can confirm "Ravers" experiences were much the same as mine, we even worked in the same branch of the RN ( Weapons Engineering).

Read that a while ago. The story about the sailor detaching the ship's wheel and racing around the deck with it roflrofl

They did seem to make a bit of a meal out of fettling that cylinder head, although Pielsticks do have a reputation for being made of toffee and she is very obviously old and knackered(the last refit must have been a proper spit and bailing wire job).

The RN have sold old ste to the Brazilians before; Minas Gerais was a knackered old ww2 carrier when they bought her in 1956 but they kept her going for 4 decades.

Me too, my mind was made up after watching "Sailor" and the job (WE too) never ever disappointed in the subsequent 29 years I did.

I'm determined not to be a "it wasn't like that in my day" ex matelot so I'm seeing the positives in this programme and I have to say (IMO) it is the least embarrassing RN recruitment video I've seen since "Sailor".

Quite like the characters they've picked so far and good to see the Chief Chock head giving a blunt and honest "down south" dit in the first episode. Think the general public have forgotten in recent years the RN isn't just a life of drinking cocktails in the Windies (as much fun as that is).

If it gets more people through the door to experience a least a few years of being a matelot then good news.

Pretty embarrassing display by the engineering dept; that seawater strainer was absolutely bogging, someone's flogging the cleaning schedule on that, in warm tropical water they need to be inspecting it more often.

Also given the sea water temps are around 35c it doesn't take long for everything to fur up and grow too....

Trying to remember the name of the TV show that followed a Type22 down to the Adriatic in '95, I was on Battleaxe at the time and we relieved the featured ship. Anyone remember the name of the program?
