We're going away soon in the family car leaving no vehicles sat on our drive for a week whilst we are away. As there have been a few burglaries around us recently I'm keen for the house not to look blatantly empty as we have a fairly large drive. We used to have another car that would be parked on the drive whilst we are away, but we no longer have it. I don't want to leave my modified beemer out front for obvious reasons.

I know this sounds a bit mad, but I'm wondering if it is worth hiring a cheap car and leaving it on the drive for a week. I'm thinking if I can get something for around £100 it's money well spent for piece of mind.

Anyone think of any other suggestions or recommend anywhere for cheap car hire? We're in Solihull, West Mids (near B'ham). If I can find a smaller company than the big names, I'm sure I can probably get what I want within budget.

Can you ask a neighbour to borrow your drive while you're away?

This is a much better idea.

If you rent/buy a car to sit on the driveway, any burglar staking out your house will note it doesn't move - suggesting you're not there.

Allowing a neighbour to use your driveway will give the appearance that people are using the property.

Ian, who has a modified Beemer and lives in a house in Solihull with a big drive is going away for a week soon - at least that's not as as bad a friend of mine who posted on FB this morning that he and his wife are on holiday abroad.

I had thought of the neighbour thing - problem is our immediate neighbour outs one of there cars in the garage, leaving them only one on the driveway. Our other neighbour is around the corner so not convenient. No houses opposite!

Put your house on AirB&B and let someone rent it for a week - Bingo! Free security, car on your drive and a few extra quid in rent

Thanks for that mate, but Solihull is a big place, with lots of houses with big drives and I could be going away at any point in the next few weeks or months.

But as we are all friends lets remove the quote or blank out the details smile

Get a Hornby train set and a cardboard cut out of celebrity of your choice.

biggrin

In all seriousness, what's wrong with a couple of light timers to come on in the evening? Are you worried that the criminals already know that you have a car on the drive and that you may be on their radar? If that's the case, then hire a car. Should only cost around £60 for a week.

we have timers etc, it's more that there will be no car on my drive for a week. Probably over thinking it. If I could find car hire for £60 then that's a no brainer.

Buy some non runner from ebay for pence, stick it on the drive then scrap it when you're done.

Try picking up at the airport - if you're in Solihull carrentals.co.uk suggests it can be done for about £74 starting on 6 May and you'd possibly get TopCashback on that too.

Solihull buddies.
My mom and dad live close to dovehouse, we haven't heard much about house burglarys apart from to steal car keys.

Can't you just ask next door to park on your drive for the week on the night?

Or buy a car for repair for a few ££ and the just resell it?

There are some very cheap Caravans on the bay, get one of those and leave it on the drive.

Why not adopt the usual PH response?

MX5 biggrin

You can get this for £900 locally, no need to get insurance as they'll deliver it.

When you get back off your trip, wait for the sun to come out, give it a quick once over with the auto-glym, drop the roof and dump it at the end of the driveway with a £1100ovno price tag.

I asked my neighbours to do this once and I got bloody burgled, burglars had obviously been keeping an eye out and the fact it was my neighbours car on my drive for more than a day told them I was away.

Don't you have any friends with a horny teenager living at home? One who's recently passed? Give them the keys for the week to park on your drive and live in your house.

Just make sure you clean the bed sheets in the master afterwards. hehe
