Ever see The Cage?
Yes I have, but please note I did not mention the original series. What is interesting to note is that only a couple of the original characters from the pilot including Spock and I think nurse Chapel made it into the series, and even then Spock's character was very different to the one portrayed in the Cage. So obviously the network was not that impressed initially

Watched it last night with the missus and I think it was mostly positive but I can certainly see page3 is coming from with some of the points.

Bad Points,

The acting was a bit stilted.

Not too keen on camera's which can't seem to stay still, just frame the shot and show me the action properly rather than making it look like it's being filmed by a 7 year old on a sugar rush.

Not sure I like what they've done with the Klingons, yes they've made them more alien rather than humans with weird foreheads which is a good thing but the acting again wasn't brilliant and constant use of Klingon\subtitles was distracting.

Good points
It's Star Trek!
The effects look very good, some of the battle effects where a little bit hokey but still better than a lot of TV stuff.
The missus actually liked it and is hooked so they've done something right to attract a wider audience as she usually doesn't like Star Trek.
The story was a bit cliched but I like the way they've set it up for the future episodes and the teaser for the rest of the season looks like it will go in a more interesting direction.

I think the acting and chemistry is a bit stilted but it can improve as the actors grow into their characters. All the Star Treks series have started off like this but soon hit their stride.I also actually like the Micheal character and I'm interested to see her character develop and how she interacts with the Captain of the Discovery. I'm not so keen on the science officer or some of the other crew though. None of them really stood out for me at the moment but hopefully the crew of the discovery will be a little more interesting.

Off to a slightly shaky but promising start IMO. Me and the missus will be watching next week.

I maybe wrong, someone did give me an English/Klingon dictionary 20 odd years ago, but I don't think that lot are speaking the same language as our original beloved war monger img race..

How many languages do we have on Earth? Who's to say that Klingons also have a number of languages, creeds, and colours.

That's why I find it odd when people complain about the look Klingons or any other species in the Star Trek universe, why cant they have various looks just as humans do?

Err because the differences go a bit deeper than the colour of the their skin or hair. wink

For what it's worth I currently prefer TNG interpretation but it's a bold move on the new series part to make them seem a lot more alien and I think in time it may grow on me.

Had the feel of a cartoon for me, both in terms of the cheesy dialogue - is that forced jokey banter really necessary every time that one of them opens their mouth? - and the over-CGI'd look.

Might develop into something watchable but more style over substance so far IMO.

Nope. But I thought it looked cool. Hopefully it will turn up on the Discovery. Judging by the fact it has a ship designation on its head I suspect all the starships may have one

It looks like the speed thing on a traditional ship, the one with full stop, 1/4 forward etc etc.

Sure this has been covered. But I'm not convinced about this new Star Trek.

Wtf with the Klingons look. No need for that at all. Not when such an established look across 4 other series and the majority of the films.

Far too much sub text/titles in the first two episodes.

Truly odd and annoying camera angles. And dark dingy horrid sets. Look how bright and easy to view The Orville is by comparison!!!!!

Not sure I get the new look uniforms, sets or ships either. Seems to not have much tie in with established a Star Trek cannon.

And the effects all look dark and rather horrid too. Voyager and DS9 have way better visuals in regards the ships and things. Which shouldn't be he case given the time since they were filmed.

Storyline didn't seem to bad and thankfully nothing like those dreadful remake Trek films of the past few years.

Hoping it'll find its way to being more like the other Series. It needs too.

Anyone expecting traditional star trek is going to be disappointed, times have changed and star trek in the concept of a tv show has to as well. i love TNG and very much doubt this will top it, but at the same time i know it is going to be character driven unlike previous series.

I enjoyed last nights epsiodes, bit of a prologue to setup the next episode as they were set a few yrs before episode 3 from what i understand so can't wait till next week

Also looked stunning in HDR

Enjoyed it but; too dark; Klingon's a bit too much also a bit wimpy; no characters/personalities and if Michael is meant to be the lead, got a long way to go for me to like her.

At the end of the day, you have to let these series get into their stride which usually takes at least half a season. Look at how badly Marvels Agents of the Shield was received in its first season and look at it now. It is seen as a standout show.

Well I'm loving it so far. Admittedly I'm not a trekkie but the last sci-fi thing that really got under my skin was the Battlestar Galactica reboot and this has a fairly similar feel imo. No issues on visuals, characters or script here; thought it was all pretty spot on.

Promising I thought. Though 99% of the starships all aligning on a imaginary horizontal plane as usual. And half the Klingons just sitting there not moving during the battle and whining at each other a bit too much. Seriously, these are a warrior race?

Oh - and exploding consoles - yay!

Lol was going to mention this. They can travel at light speed and transport people but once again they seem to have forgotten about a little invention called a fuse. smile

I guess it wouldn't be Star Trek though.
