As sci-fi goes it isn't bad, but it just doesn't feel like Star Trek.

I’m just watching it as a sc fi series and it just happens to have some tenuous links to Star Trek.

I’m not convinced about the spor drive and bug driven navigation, for me that takes it into the realms of fantasy rather than sc fi, but I’ll se how it goes.

Interesting turn of events at the end of episode 5.
I wonder if the plot might take a similar turn to this guy from the original series...

I'm outraged. They zoom into the black female pilots face and then announce "Black Alert". What the hell is this racism!

Another excellent episode. Loved the duplicitous Mudd character and the references to Archer and Pike.

And the X-rated language! “fk”, in Star Trek..eek

It is getting into the swing of things now...

Much more Trek like.

If you bailed out early - give it another go.

Happy days.

I enjoyed episode 4 a bit more. Learning to accept it I think!

Agreed, definitely more trekkie now and still really enjoying it.

Klingons remain too weak for my liking though, sort of pantomime villain almost. Also there's too much fake monster bendy finger stuff going on. The tall cow dude, the Klingons, they're all at it.

I was really shocked by the F Bomb though!

Personally I think pretty much everything you’ve said in this thread is utter nonsense. And that’s being polite.
I don't know, I think the thing about the drive adds up fine. If the drive only works with the bug beast installed, and using the bug beast harms or kills it, then the drive isn't viable. So it doesn't appear later in the Star Trek timeline.
Pretty sure the Romulus, Klingons, Breen, Dominion, Kardasians and many others wouldn’t care however.

I've watched all four so far...

Other species' make-up - ridiculous
Special effects - an insult to 'amateur'
Plots - ridiculous and incredible
Acting - dubious
Pseudoscience - a joke

I really wanted to like this and hoped it would improve, but it's fairly obvious that it's not going to happen.

Much of the tech in trek has been pseudoscience ..... and the plots are often very similar.

The SFX are pretty good, so I'm not sure where you get the "amateur" bit. It ranks alongside any other decent TV show.

I'm expecting to see complaints about "oh no, gay relationships in star trek" and was surprised at the profanity, although they were right - it was pretty fecking cool.

Enjoying the show so far.

There are a few complaints you can level at Discovery but your list is a bit daft and if those things are annoying you about this then SciFi probably isn’t for you....

My biggest interest from this weeks episode is the fella that Lorca brought back with him, what happened to the albino Klingon?

Also, the werid engineer left in the mirror bit at the end, aren’t we getting a mirror universe episode?

I'm not totally trusting that fella that Lorca brought back; have a bad feeling ...

But that mirror bit threw us; knew there would be some price to pay for him using the DNA injection to get the spore drive working. Mirror universe again ... and I'm pretty sure that Harry is going to be back at some point.

Another good episode I think, and as predicted the giant bed bug was never going to be a viable long term solution.

As for the F-bomb, it was a bit of a shock but also funny, I see no reason why profanity would still not be used in the future.

Let's not forget that Data in the Next Generation has form on this:

I had no idea Rainn Wilson was going to be in this! I'm a huge fan of his and according to his IMDB page he turns up in future episodes.

Shame about the Star Wars sound effects in last nights episode.

I so want to love this new series. I don’t hate it. Although there is much I dislike about it. But it just doesn’t feel Star Trek. Watched a few TNG episodes as well last night. And in every important aspect they are far far superior.

Such a shame as I loved DS9 from the off. Was super excited about Voyager and couldn’t wait to see Enterprise. So much so I managed to watch a pre-production version of the first episode (it had no music/backing music). And they are all great. Enjoyed them so much I watched the all the series many times over.

Discovery is certainly lacking the majesty and gracefulness of the ships. So much of the other series, even TOS was about the ships and exterior views. And in most cases the ships dominate the title roll. But not so with Discovery.

I believe he is referring to the non-existent sound of laser guns firing in space

35m 37sec in episode 5. Bring on the pod racers and the star destroyer laser cannons. wink
