On BBC2 tonight, will it be a Spitting Image, or a 2DTV, will it be a Yes, Prime Minister or a 2012.

Similar shows in the past, 11 O'clock show?

Not a patch on John Oliver, but it has got Ellie Taylor in it.

I do agree that Last Week Tonight is exceptionally funny...but this certainly has legs and was very funny also! So it just needs a bit of time to find itself and it could become one of the funniest shows on TV at the moment. There certainly isn't much else to compete against it though!

I meant to say something like that myself, but got distracted by Ellie. Being the very first episode it is way to early to make too much judgement.

Needs a series under its belt to find its feet.

Got potential, but needs work.

Thought it was a bit weak, some genuine laughs in there, but they were spread. Best bit was the Tory, the host is weak, as are the 'serious' reporter and two news readers, the correspondent with different wigs was good.

Managed maybe 10 minutes.

One or two good ideas but terribly done.
Looks like a BBC committee designed attempt to be "edgy".
Non-white presenter - check.
Female presenter - check.
Tories the devil - check.
Apparently canned laughter?

Dire.

Same here, the canned laughter did it for me. I'll watch just about any old st but this just grated.

Just watching now, and I agree that the laughter track does seem rather intrusive and false.

The acting seems rather forced too. It all feels a bit "trying too hard".

However, it's early days and they will probably need some time to settle into it so I'll keep an open mind for now.

On the "forced" observation:
I think they were trying to present in the style of "this is a spoof, you know it, we know it and we're showing we know you know we know it". That's very hard to carry off. Should have played it perfectly straight a la Chris Morris.

yes
The best bit for me was the Tory, and this was because the main guy seemed to genuinely not know what the other guy was going to say. I would say it was acting, but from looking at the rest of the show he's not that good.

Give it chance. First episode and all that. I thought it was great.

Where can you see John Oliver?

I did say in my second post that it needs a series to find its feet.

John Oliver is on Sky Atlantic on Monday. Currently on a break, back next week.

Second episode was much improved. Still not a fan of the tweets section, but some of the headlines were very sharp!
