What's going on at Radio 2?
Discussion
Up until recently I couldn't give a st about BBC tv and wanted to see the licence abolished but was concerned this would affect BBC radio now I couldn't care less LBC and talk radio is varied and has all the political spectrum
lively conversation as apposed to the smug one sided bbc narrative ...
and then there is internet radio massive choice without some over paid pillock
and his ego talking crap, apart from the likes of Johnny Walker most are turkeys...

Simon Mayo is, to my mind, a broadcasting legend. Very, very few people even come close to matching the ability he has to be affable, sincere, witty, insightful, sympathetic, etc - sometimes all in the space of minutes. To give a co-presenter to someone who is so good at what they do strikes me as a giant kick in the balls. I'm aware that he has a co-presenter on his other show - but that is slightly different and the show originated as such.
He deserves to keep his own show, and what's more I don't want some lesser presenter diluting just about the only person on radio who doesn't drive me nuts. I await much blah-ing about Glastonbury and the Live Lounge. Why not let a female presenter have the 36% of Steve Wright's air time that is presently occupied by cheesy jingles from 45 years ago? Why not share Chris Evans's salary between him and Sharleen Spiteri, who may as well be a permanent fixture on his show anyway?
To hear that Simon Mayo's show is getting an extra hour... but with Jo Whiley, is like Ford saying "We're building a RWD, 300bhp, V6, 50mpg... compact convertible SUV styled by SsannggYyonngg!"
unless, of course, he’s actually happy with this and can wind down to some extent. I agree he is a superb broadcaster. He deserves to keep his own show, and what's more I don't want some lesser presenter diluting just about the only person on radio who doesn't drive me nuts. Who’s the annoying twerp standing in for vine? 5 minutes was all I could stand.
He’s everywhere - has stood in for Evans, Mayo, Vine.... He was editor of the Independent and also a critic on Masterchef for some reason. I don’t mind him, actually, and the BBC are obviously trying to get their money’s worth out of him Doesn't this thread just tell you that different ppl like different things? Note also chaps that I think this thread has been entirely blokes commenting? If Ive missed a lass out then I apologise...Ali usually gets a word in for these sorts of conversations.
Due to the nature of my commuting now and my lack of DAB, the radio is permanently tuned to R2.
I dont mind Feltz at 5am on Monday morning, she is easy going enough. The only bit I can't abide is the Jolly Good Fellow bit. I just flick the iPod thingy on for 5 mins then. Evans/Cox for 5-10mins is easy enough, Mayo on the way back. Confessions remains consistently high quality amusing.
The return journey has been a mix of Thurs and Fri, afternoon/early evening/evening 200 miles across country,
Wrighty is tolerable. Wrighty on Friday with Serious Jock'n is much better. For a long time it was pointless and worth the slating, but its now a tight and targeted 45mins of silliness. It has a point now and works very well.
Mayo works brilliantly on Foody Thurs and works just fine on the Drive in on Friday. Both are light-entertainment and easy listening.
Thurs has always been Whispering Bob Harris and well..nuff said. The man is a legend for a reason. Animatronic standing in for Jo has been great fun.
I find R2 gets the balance of its lineup just right. Vine is for the daytime tv audience - hence he is a fkwit.

You'll need to explain this one to me because I hate it, people calling in and sayin' serious "cookin' without a G." perhaps I just don't get it. tight fart said:
Mr multiple choice who talks to much, he'd ask a question and while the person was trying to answer he'd give the a list of options.
Vanessa Feltz does the same thing when standing in, only she tries to display her wide vocabulary whilst doing it. ps. I like Steve Wright's show.

Listening to Blackburn at the moment, dear mother of god. Oh how I miss Desmond. Don't even get me started on Alan Carr and Mel Sykes - how and why?!
I quite like Tony Blackburn. Proper old school DJ, very slick. Agree about Alan Carr though. Utter st.Escort3500 said:

It is so disappointing. I'm not a massive fan of Mayo, but he is a 'really good mainstream DJ' and I can tolerate his entourage for the most part. Very few times I consider turning off. Jo Whiley adds a whole new negative spin/cycle, I'm curious as to how it will work but I can see myself turning off R2 soon after 5pm each day. More incentive to work quicker, I suppose. I always thought that Young had a very clever style if interviewing. He often got guests to say and admit things that a more aggressive "Paxmanesque" style would never have achieved. He was a kind of early version of Louis Theroux.
And he also did "Recipe for Today" with his side kick Raymondo

For the record - that '36%' of airtime is covert nepotism. Steve Wright's brother writes all his musical stings and jingles, so as well as no doubt having been paid handsomely by the BBC for them he will be regularly collecting a fat PRS cheque on the back their use in the daily shows.Prawo Jazdy said:

Indeed, I thought his style was excellent. Gassing Station | TV, Film, Video Streaming & Radio | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
