Yup, I can't seem to get on with the main single player games at the moment so end up pottering on MMOs playing solo instead. Seems to work for me but if you're not having fun, bin it and hit the gym or find another hobby - it's all good!

After all the games will still be here and you can get them cheaper on steam sale in 6 months! biggrin

I'm 45 in November and this happened to me a while back, but with the racing games I now play with a rig and wheel setup, it's a substitute for doing track days IRL and gives me a great deal of enjoyment still, because I'm first and foremost a petrolhead.

I used to enjoy FPS and strategy (C&C) games but I very quickly get bored now. I think I've posted before that I don't consider myself a gamer any more I'm a virtual racer smile

I have the Oculus Rift and have been playing Elite Dangerous, I've played 19 hours over the course of a month or so and I'm already getting bored of that...

I don't think it's a passing phase either, I find that racing is more physical, gets my heart pumping with adrenaline, Elite is very sedate in comparison. I'm at a stage where I'm only watching F1 on TV and an occasional film, I much prefer getting up and doing something, anything rather than sitting around turning into a blob physically and mentally. With the racing games I don't feel I'm sitting still in the same way.

I lost mine a couple of years ago. Single players just seemed like a pointless waste of time and I found getting bored with FPS multiplayers through one complaint or another.
Racing games still maintained my focus but I had other things to occupy my time and the gaming went out of the window (middle 30s) and the consoles were sold.

I've recently thought about buying another Xbox one, just for Forza and the odd foray on BF4 or BFOne. I tried playing BF4 on my laptop but I found I was fking about with the gfx settings too much to get a decent game. Theres a lot to be said about the simplicity of gaming consoles.

it's a hobby, and supposed to be enjoyable. I wouldn't force yourself to play anything if you are not in the mood. I played 2 hours of the Witcher 3 before going 'nah, can't be arsed' - despite playing 1 and 2. I'm not going to force myself to do it.

Maybe though you need to try something different (genre wise). Something you wouldn't normally do.
The last thing I did that with was Life is Strange, and it not only blew my socks off and was the best thing I played that year but opened me up to consider lot's of different things I never normally would, generally being a strategy / RPG player.

Yes and no. There are months where I don't play a game, and other times when I play a game to death. The controlling factor is whether there's a new game out that I want to play! I'm currently waiting for the next Assassin's Creed, which is out soon (I think!). After that it'll be Far Cry 5 I imagine, and some months between the two. No point forcing yourself to play a game you've finished and are tired of, or playing for the sake of it...

Here's a question - why does it bother you? biggrin

I find myself swinging between a couple of games. Play one, get bored, move to the other. Rinse and repeat.

The problem I find with modern games is that they are just too grindy. You have to put in hundreds of hours to get top level gear or pay real cash to press fast forward, on top of the purchase cost.

For instance, I play a lot of War Thunder. You can play for nothing (which I have) however to buy a tank or two will cost £60 or more. There are hundreds of tanks/planes to unlock.

The total cost to get them all is thousands. Whether that's pounds or hours is up to you.

I understand that devs obviously need funding to do their work and that with games having longer gestation periods DLC is a necessary evil.

I for one miss the days of paying £50 and having a complete game that you don't need to give up your first born for in order to progress.

Haven't played video games in over 7 years.

Had a brief foray into elite dangerous for a few weeks but got bored.

I'd love to get a vr headset and have a go but don't have the time nor the dedication to spend hours/weeks/months of my life locked away in a room to get good at a multiplayer game.

Now I spend my time outside walking, biking and in the shed building stuff.

I much prefer to be physically active that twiddling my thumbs

Don't worry. It's not the end of the world as you know it. Get a new hobby

Competitive stuff outside of racing sims has taken a major sideline for me. Too many years of toxicity from players and the negative atmosphere a lot seem to generate. Heroes of the Storm was the last one and that basically killed it for me.
These days I enjoy more story driven things, Firewatch for example and RPG games like Witcher 3 (still trying to finish the base game, too many crashes frown )

I think it's just a case of becoming more discerning with your time, maybe recognising what is actually enjoyable more than just passing the time and maybe even that you value your time more as you get older.

Still like to go 'online' as it were but I prefer games where you get to be more PvE than PvP, I find the player bases to be more relaxed and friendly when everyone's not at each others throats.

That's maybe a bit unfair but there is truth in it too, there are a LOT more games these days it seems and the balance of poor to good is leaning strongly one way. Steam and Valve are to blame in part for flooding the market with huge amounts of garbage content, the other end is early access. Early Access has made me become less and less interested in game announcements because they're often not about a finished product.

I don't play any proper games these days either. I used to spend an unhealthy amount of time in my home made cockpit playing Live for speed . Before that I was into FPS's starting with doom and moving on to Rise of the Triads, Quake and Duke Nukem.
I don't really feel like there has been a great deal of improvement on games after that period.
Sure, the graphics improved but that's it. The games themselves are no better, they just took up more and more bandwidth and hard drive space! I still find it hard to believe I used to play online FPS's on a 56k modem but these days you seem to need 30 times that much bandwidth. Why?
Maybe I just got old, maybe youngsters today feel like they are at the forefront of gaming, I think it was twenty years ago.

Having said that I did play some GTA V and the sheer map size etc IS impressive.

I think it must be an age thing smile

Very little which comes out grabs me anymore...I think it may be a case of "seen it all before". Still love a few games of BF1 every week with mates, and I've been enjoying Total War:Warhammer, but the open world stuff just doesn't grab me for long. Dying Light for example was a great game, but I just couldn't be arsed. Likewise Witcher 3. I avidly played all the Halos up to 4, but have no interest in the new ones, or Destiny for that matter.

I've felt this way for around a year now, and speaking to my mate down the pub one night, so is he. I've found myself rarely getting hooked into a game these days, like the OP I'll play something for half an hour then get bored and either want to play something else, or go and do something else entirely. I think it's reached the point where I'm sitting down to play a game purely because of habit rather than because I want to, so I've found myself wanting to go and watch TV on an evening rather than game.

I used to be able to get stuck in to complex games, but now if something doesn't grab me within the first few minutes then my attention wanes and I end up leaving it, so the games I've been playing lately are more casual in nature (latest being Car Mechanic Simulator 2018 - I play it for thirty mins or so then stop).

In fact there has been a few threads about this topic this year, it must be a common feeling of late!

One thing I have found is that given my playtime is currently very restricted - I am lucky to get an hour or two and evening, and luckier if I am not absolutely knackered with it - that I do cherish the time I get to play games.
It also means I am a lot less tolerant of games that appear to waste my time, and don't mind if I feel that I've had enough without finishing something.

I think that's me too. If I get stuck I have no patience, and usually end up giving up after a very few tries.

I don't get as much enjoyment out of games as I used to. I often wonder whether it's down to a fading ability to "play." By that I mean the ability to suspend disbelief and become immersed in a game.

I watch my eldest (9 year old) son play video games and he can become completely immersed (to the point of obsession). I sometimes join him on the PS3 (mainly Lego games which I used to love, or Little Big Planet) and it quickly becomes a chore (or I start to feel the pull of other jobs I need to be getting on with). I sometime feel that I've got so little free time that I've forgotten how to use it.

Last night I played IL-46 for 30 mins. I randomly loaded up missions I liked the look of and played them in a sort of kamikaze style until I got bored. It's not gaming really.

Have you tried dusting down older games assuming you still keep them?

My crack addiction lies in Diablo 2. Haven't played in over a year but if I fire it up now, I won't get any work done until maybe 8pm tonight as I'll try to build up the perfect character again. I generally play networked games but lock the server so I'm alone. silly I do sometimes do a dungeon rush with other players. Actually, does anyone else still play it online? As I say, I've not played it in ages.

I was feeling the same and had lost interest in my PS4. I had BF4 and BF1 but wasn't feeling it like BF3 in the old days.

The two games that have kept my PS4 in Game mode this year are Trials Fusion and Alienation. Both very simple old school style games and have kept me playing for hours and hours.
