Holy crap it's graphic, only 25 mins in. One tends to forget it wasn't all Erroll Flynn in those days.

Dooley is playing his part well.
I think Smiler has sort of hit the nail on the head - people as a collective do forget it wasn't all Erroll Flynn. I would elaborate though to say it wasn't AT ALL Erroll Flynn. It was a viscious, nasty and religiously zealous. Protestants and Catholics were dheads to each other for hundreds of years. Mary set fire to a lot of them - and I doubt that would have been pretty.

The violence wasn't for show - that's pretty much how it went back then. Graphic and brutal executions were routine to act as a deterrent and to remind people who was boss.

Lose the gore, lose the impact in my opinion. I personally don't think the majority of the audience would be imaginative enough to grasp how grim it all was if it was left to implication - and that would then leave the story half told.

I also think Game of Thrones must have desensitized me a bit as I didn't think it was that bad

The gore wasn’t overly graphic. Mind you we covered nasty stuff in history at school back in the 80s.
An engaging enough program. Will be interesting to see how it develops.

Just watched the first episode. I really enjoyed it.

And I only found out today that Kit Harrington is a direct descendant of Robert Catesby, which I think adds a little extra to the tale.

I've never seen any of Game of Thongs.

I didn't think the gory stuff was gratuitous, but I was grim. Still, R4 had complaints about putting on the Omen in the Book at Bedtime slot.

Slightly off topic, the 21.00 slot on BBC 2 tonight is the first of three parts about the spying & cyphers used by the the Catholics & William Cecil (as played by Gatiss) during the reign of Elizabeth I (the precursor to this story)

Edit to add: Bone Tomahawk - excellent film.

On the local radio tonight they had a history buff, an expert on the Gunpowder plot, who was most rude about the dramatic license allegedly taken, my God did he bang on, worse than a steam train buff arguing about the number of rivets on a steam train in a 1940s drama. I felt sorry for the presenter having to deal with this arse.

Seemed that he objected to the portrayal of the two executions being held in the location used or implied whereas in history they actually took place in York. This meant that for him the whole show was totally ruined, apparently.

This place is equally bad for that in fairness.

The hint of something a bit niche getting popularised and the pedants and anoraks are straight out of the woodwork to make sure everyone realises they liked it first, like it more and know more.

This usually takes the form of excruciatingly dry detail being used as a bludgeon over people who just want to be a bit interested - like a sort of alpha nerd.

For more examples on Pistonheads of spods trying to out spod each other and claiming something as minor as an air filter totally destroying the magic see threads on :

  • Dunkirk (actually any modern war film)
  • Rush

Actually, yes, very fair comments there. It's still as annoying as hell though. And boring.

I must admit I do get pissed off with laziness in detail rather than poetic licence. Just watching Camp X on the History channel and one of the re-enacted scenarios has B29s flying over Greece. They were never used in Europe and it would’ve been just as easy to use footage or CGI as was in this case of B24s. Just lazy research in production. Perhaps I’m a closet rivet counter after all. laugh

Lewes, county town of East Sussex.

I'm hoping to pop down again this Nov 4 for the party - if the weather is good.

For the rivet counters - Lewes was the site of a matyrdom of 17 Protestants (burnt at the stake) in the name of the Pope. Every November the bonfire committee put on this display where each society carries 17 crosses, and each represents some 'theme' (including native amercians - there are archive records of Lewes men fighting at Little Big Horn). Every year there is a Pope effigy burned, plus another topical guy and numerous minor sideshows. It's a hoot.

There was even a law in England to make everybody celebrate Nov 5 annually, repealed in 1959.

I learned all this from my postman today - he's a 40+ year bonfire committee man.

As for the series - the executions were visceral, and the steam coming off the entrails a nice touch. Unpleasant, but well done quite disturbing because of it.

Just a quick heads up if you weren't aware - The authorities are trying to minimise attendance this year, so there are no trains and plenty of road closures.

Very well produced but it got far too graphic for my liking and I turned it off.

A shame as I was enjoying it up to "that" point, but that sort of graphic content is not for me I'm afraid.
I was really looking forward to this, but too many reports like this for my liking so gonna have to give it a miss.

Appreciate this is all probably a good reflection of the times, but I was more fascinated to see more about the actual 'story' as was hoping it'd be more focussed on that than the gore. frown

Thanks for that - unbelievable! Previously we've taken the train from Glynde and it's been great...sobs. I'll have to make my own effigy of the 'gold commander' on the night and burn that.

You should at least be in the same room as the TV if you're going to slag it off!

I thought it was ok... nothing special, but interesting to get some background on why they did what they did (we never hear that on Nov 5th!).

Also interested to hear why Kit produced it, what his middle name is, and why.
