I can actually speak from a bit of experience regards PM. I lent one of the shows he presented my car for a quick segment (as it turned out, so they could rip the piss out of it), so got to see him 'at work' around cars in front of a camera. .
I think the most important thing is we need to see the car to see if it was worthy of praise or piss taking.Clockwork Cupcake said:

That's what I was going to say - they're all awful, whether Brundle does it or whoever. I think DC does quite a good job of them, given the circumstances, and Webber's not been doing them long enough to become polished at it.
I've said this many times on F1 threads, so apologies, but I think they have had their day. When Brundle invented the concept, it was fresh, it was new, drivers would happily talk to him because a) it was a novelty and b) a lot of them were contemporaries of Brundle so he already had a relationship with them. Now, everyone is doing it, and drivers are sick and fed up with having a microphone thrust in their faces from the moment they step onto the grid until the moment they are in the car with their helmet on. And it shows.
And we won’t go into driver interviews just as they’re getting out of their cars. Oh, and Coulthard is dreadful as a presenter and interviewer.

I think the most important thing is we need to see the car to see if it was worthy of praise or piss taking. It was on a show called 'Stars and their Cars' (or some st - it was garbage, whatever it was). They asked me to bring it down to film with for a show where 'slebs' re-discover cars from their pasts. Sold it on the premise that that's why they needed a BX, and they even knew that's why I believed it was going down there. Took a day off work, fuelled it up - the lot.
What they actually did was park it up, and he minced over and said something like "Cars tell a story about your personality and are a reflection of you. I'm not sure what kinda story this thing is trying to tell though." Turned out they had a 'crap' car at the beginning of each episode to belittle, before moving on to whatever popular car they were focusing on that week.
I didn't go into full geek mode about why the engine used in it is one of the best twin-cammers from the 1980's (and the first production 16v French car), or how the suspension is more advanced than the majority of stuff still on sale today....or even that this car tells a story of nearly 15 years of my life from the age of twenty, through meeting my wife, moving out of my parents and bringing my first children (twins) back from the hospital. It pissed me off no end, because cars can be deeply personal things, and inspite of them being exactly that - 'things'! It certainly tells more of a story than some 18 month old H/P BMW X5. But yeah, I just left quietly.
Haven't really thought about it until now. I'm well over it though. Can you tell?

I wouldn't want someone slapping their hand on my car. It was on a show called 'Stars and their Cars' (or some st - it was garbage, whatever it was). Really? Do you keep it under the bed, wrapped in bog roll?Plus, he's covering a dent. There's a story behind that dent too. You know, cos the car has a story.....

Watching it now. It brings home that Matt will be missed.
It's really quite sad. After the aberration of the Chris Evans year, the show was developing nicely - 3 good presenters (I liked Rory Reid, OK - I thought he brought a different, and often thoughtful, take on things), some decent ideas and scripts, and great cinematography.I can understand Matt LeBlanc wanting to move on and spend time with his family, but the BBC seems to have panicked. I'd far rather they rested it for a year or two, rather than rushing to fill a gap and ending up repeating the abortion that was the Chris Evans year.
