In some late news, Jeremy Clarkson has just been given his own show "Cricketing Analysis" while Chris Harris has been selected to star in "Phoenix Nights - the Out-Takes".

What are you going on about? Really can't be bothered to read that.

Do you think an ex-cricketer and a failed comedian will make great TG presenters or not?
TL;DR - Shakermaker proposes a lengthy and exhaustive selection process that a potential presenter must score highly on. It is almost impossible to pass.

Corollary: some internet commentards will never be happy.

This man gets it!

ETA. The rot set in on Top Gear when the majority of the presenters didn't have a background in motoring journalism. Even taking that back to the earlier days, for every Noel Edmonds or Angela Rippon you had several Chris Goffey types. Top Gear's peak was when it was exclusively presenters from a motoring critic background. It slumped when it became "TGITopGear" featuring a host of slebs plus two youtube-generation equivalents of motoring journalists.

It recovered a little when the balance was redressed (having only one sleb and same two youtube motoring journalists), but now the slebs outnumber the journos again so purely by the lessons of history it is destined to tank.

Instead of trying to recreate the CHM era maybe they should go full circle and get William Woollard and Chris Goffey back.

I think May already did that using the exhaust/engine note of various cars to provide the soundtrack.

Can't believe that the BBC learned nothing from the Chris Evans season, and it was just beginning to get good too.

Didn't Chris Evans put his hand up and take the flack therefore in the minds of execs they are in the clear of any decisions. As said it was getting good again. Will be funny watching it fail. I'll watch for the cringe.

Don't think Evans had much of a choice ---it was down to him that it was ste.

Slightly confused by your post. You make it sound like the BBC are breaking up something that was starting to work, whereas the reality is that Matt LeBlanc has decided not to renew his contract so the BBC are forced to find a new presenter.

True but what they should have learnt is that you need a draw, a quality presenter who people will warm to and like. It's hard not to find MLB likable and charming. Two bluff Northerners was never the answer.

Surely you find a MLB-a-like

And for continuity you keep your existing presenting team. Reid and Harris with very VERY occasional others

They have had plenty audition for the part when they have appeared as a star in a reasonably priced car. Surely they just needed to look back through and say this person works well and likes cars, just like someone did with Matt LeBlanc.

Examples being Brian Johnson, Kevin McCloud, Jennifer Saunders, John Bishop, Ross Noble, you may not personally like them but they could all have done it if available. Hell why not add the Carpool/Fully Charged team of Robert Llewelyn and Johnny Smith to the team.

I really enjoy the chemistry of Steve Jones and David Coulthard on C4. These two, along with Chris Harris, could make a great line up for TG. You'd have:

- A proper racing driver who could wring the necks of cars
- A proper motoring journalist who knows how to review cars
- A proper TV presenter who can tie it all together

Appreciate Steve Jones might not be everyone's cup of tea but I find him pretty amusing, and he's clearly passionate about F1 at least.
