I thought I saw a New Beetle cab in their series highlights. I didn't realise it would be quite so bad though.

I've just stumbled upon this thread.

I can't see where the anger and hate comes from. If you dislike it don't watch it surely?

I enjoy the show, like seeing old cars being made to live again, and don't really care if it's all fake. Can you imagine sending a film crew to an actual workshop, doing jobs the proper way and in real time? Yes it would be authentic but as dull as ditchwater.

Absolutely. I just watch now to see how bad it will get. It certainly has the potential to get a lot worse.

Depends on whether you're interested in seeing skills in action or not.
Something like bhin Rides is a million times more interesting than Goblin

I think what annoys me is that twice they have taken what on the face of it were already restored cars and did a custom job on them. The Land Rover looked very tidy when they bought it, but the end product could just as easily have been made from a basket case Land Rover. Similarly the Fiat 500. Although, i would accept that the 500 was more real world in terms of final product

Was that the "slammed" Land Rover that was a blatant copy of the one Bryn Musselwhite had about 10 years ago ?

I assume the pretence that they are a business is to add the ridiculous ‘false jeopardy’ that seems to be needed on every programme these days. I just caught the end of the Fiat 500 episode- why would you even consider paying £44k for a project where the budget is £40k without prior agreement to any changes? And where do they get these ‘clients’ - £40k for what looked like bastardised tarted up Fiat? Admittedly it’s a slightly different end product but really nice restored originals are only £12k or so. It’s ‘made for telly’ bks.

Or maybe it would be extremely entertaining?

One (of several things) I can't stand about GWG is their repeatedly taking credit for other peoples work. Much of the aesthetic stuff is subjective obviously, but much of it is just utter gash. Yes, it's TV and there was always going to be a bit of fakery but the whole premise of this show has been done to death.

That's the whole thing, is not even done very well!
They say to the camera "oo, we're artisans look what we've designed and made", yet a simple google of the firms they use show blog posts or pictures of the firms doing the work. The lies are just so easy to uncover, it's like they're taking us for mugs.
We all know shows like Car SOS can end up using other firms to some of the work like engine rebuilds etc, but the firms involved don't plaster it over their own websites, and the Car SOS lot don't claim credit for the work they've not carried out.

I just caught the end of the Fiat EV 500.

Wow, what a gratingly irritating bunch of people. I thought the one was annoying on 5th Gear but this is another level.

If a client says £40k and wants it white, you don't chuck garish stickers on it and charge £46500 and the Goblin neon sign was total gash. It all looked nasty and cheap and don't get me started on having a dog in the car.

Indeed- and why do they wave their bloody arms so much about when doing the ‘pieces to camera’? I assume the producers want to emphasise their passion what with them being such skilled artisans.

It wouldn't be difficult for this stupid TV program maker to get some credible material. All you've got to do is go to YouTube, type in 'Hand Built Cars'. Dozens of very credible efforts there.

I was just thinking the same today - I only watched it last night on catch up. If they wantto have some pretence of being a business, you don't go jeopardy with the client, you go through with the client as the project develops. And you wouldn't agree a budget of whatever, before you had costed it. Why go out and find the cost of the motor and batteries after you have set a budget.

That said £44k, may be quite cheap, the Swind E classic Mini is £79k
https://swind.life/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/E-Cl...

I think what would have been more interesting would have been to take a Nissan Leaf and use it as a donor. Not knocking the EV company they used, they look like they do nice conversions if you check out their website, but purpose built EVs like Leafs, Zoes and Teslas do away with the gearbox, and must make a neater installation. I think reverse happens by reversing the motor, rather than a reverse gear for example.

Then chucking out the 12V battery - oops - you still need that for running the conventional electrics, lights, blower motor etc won't take kindly to 18V far less 48V.

Which reminds me they didn't address HVAC. Fifth Gear had the Swind E electric classic Mini recently which had electric underfloor heating and I think a heated front screen, need when you don't have engine cooling water too use.

Was it the Viva that they gave 'pepperpot wheels' to, supposedly designed back in the day to aid getting cooling air to the brakes, or was it to draw hot air off them. Either way, if that was the case, then everything would have them...and still have them today. Rubbish

...and I only really watch it now because it is just on the edge of so bad it's good, the vain hope they will keep their hands in their pockets, and to see if they do something that is intersting. Though I think this series, they seem to be making more of a point of explaining what they are doing, and I wonder if that is down to the slating they have been getting.

Here endeth the Sunday Sermon.

We can discuss it over coffee and scones in the lobby

How on earth did it get a second series? I imagined deville running out with a stilton cheese on a fork.
That Viva, wtf were those rear lights? how is sticking a bit of sheet metal over a light 'frenching' not to mention, no reflectors, that would be lethal on the road on a black car. How can they churn out such crap.
In this series they seem to be buying already done up cars and then spoiling them.
This programme is so annoying, I just watch it out of morbid curiousity to see what horrors they produce.

Anyhow I also that ratfaced Pritchard is somehow also got another go , why is it these programmes are so universally hated by car folk.
