It's not a musical!
It's a film with music. That's a musical to me.Blues Brothers is not.
For years one of my 2 favourite films as a kid, this and Animal House.
One of my favourites too, celebrated my 17th birthday and getting my provisional licence by driving to the local premiere a 'couple of years' ago.
Was put off slightly when my big sister told me it was a musical.
"Orange Whip?"
"Orange Whip?"
"3 Orange Whips"
Restaurant scene asking to buy the women and children....
Such an all round great film.
Belushi and Aykroyd were the perfect pairing in this film. Lets not forget Ms Fisher as the squeeze either.
For me Blues Brothers, Italian Job and ET (I know, just it was a big film as a kid) are the 3 I could watch 100's of times. In fact probably have..

OK, define a musical then show me how it's not one

Ok, so a musical is a film or stage show where the story is largely delivered in song format, Calamity Jane (a timeless masterpiece) is an excellent example. The Blues Brothers is a film about a rhythm and blues band getting back together and raising money for the lead singers' orphanage. So there's going to be music in the context of the story ( and, I'll accept, a couple of set pieces - Think and Shake a Tail Feather being two that spring to mind - but what else were they going to do with Aretha Franklin? The scene at Ray's Music Exchange was contextual to begin with but burst out onto the street of course but added nothing to the storyline). The gigs at Bob's Country Bunker and the hotel ballroom were part of the plot. Despite my analysis above, some will still call it a musical simply because it contains musical numbers, others a comedy road movie. Me though, it's one of my all-time favourites!

"I'm gonna catch that sucker. If its the last thing I ever do."
"Hey..... they broke my watch!"
"We've got both kindas of music; Country & Western,"
"Car's got a lot of pickup,"
That film was a sort of right of passage back in the day when Videos were new and exciting & you could only rent them. The conversation went pretty much like this;
"We've just got a Video,"
"Ooooohh, have you got a Video,"
"Yes. We've. Got. A. Video,"
"Have you seen the The Blues Brothers?"
"The Blues Brothers? What's that?"
"You have to see The Blues Brothers, its incredible!"
So you did and then you had the same conversation with someone else down line. It was like something going viral. Just very, very slowly....
Ahh. Happy days.....

Didn't watch it last night (fell asleep) but I have seen it a hundred times. I have the extended dvd which goes to some extent to explain how the car can do wonderful things... get it, an extra 30 minutes of Blues Brothers can only be good!
Wierdly, I don't like rhytham and blues yet adore every song in the movie!

Damn it, damn it, damn it - how did I miss seeing that it was on.....
Calm down, don't fret it's on again on Friday 26th Jan at 11pm on ITV4.It's just that there's so little worth making sure you're in front of the TV for that when something escapes me I get peeved...
