The Visit

a film by Shamaylan...and the twist is, er, it's actually pretty good. It's a found footage film, now normally I cannot stand these they're all turd and I cannot think of one I like. This one sort of plays on Shamy's rep, but it is rather good.

Logan Lucky.

Decided to watch this last night after usually skipping it for something else but it’s very good.

Was a surprise that one. Way more powerful and affecting than I was expecting. The end is gutting.
Yes, really liked this one, like you say, a tough ending!

The Greatest Showman

Ok, I am late to this one but I thought it was a great feelgood movie. We watched it at an outdoor cinema and it seemed most people had seen it before, more than once and most knew the words of the songs. Thumbs up from me.

Watched the above last night, VERY funny film smile
Switched off when de Niro was wking while watching porn.

That gratuitous shock tactic isn't needed in a comedy ffs.

Hotel Artemis

hmmmm, had high hopes from the trailer / cast that this would be a Tarantino-level stylish black humour film

I enjoyed it but its a bit of a mess - its set in a dystopian future so gets away with the some of the implausible plot-lines, without ever really engaging or being clever enough, great set though

6/10

Is Jodie Foster really that old or is it make up?

Game Night - Had been led to believe it was going to be "hilarious", so I was a little disappointed it was only just "funny", just goes to show again that it's never a good idea to take in high hopes to a film.

Still a fair 6.5/10.
Worked brilliantly in a packed cinema, can be quite a different experience with comedies vs watching them at home.

I had a bit of a moviefest at the weekend:-

First of all, thank you to RESSE for his recommendation of Only The Brave about a group of wildfire fighting firefighters from Missouri (I think) and their various interpersonal relationships set over a couple of years. Surprisingly good and engrossing character based movie. Good performances all round. Some funny moments, some incredibly sad moments (I may have got some dust in my eye at one point!!) Well worth a watch - very solid 8/10

Unknown - Highly implausible thriller starring Liam Neeson as a man who ends up in a coma for 4 days following an accident, only to find afterwards that his wife among others claim to have no idea who he is. Basically Neeson doing what Neeson does. Suspend your disbelief before watching and hopefully you'll enjoy it as much as I did. - 7/10

THOR: Ragnarok As others have already said, one of the more enjoyable offerings from the Marvel universe. It was actually quite refreshing that none of it was set on earth. Very solid 8/10

Ready Player One - I didn't know much about this going in, only that Spielberg directed so, I was reasonably confident it wouldn't be terrible. Set in a future where most people spend most of their free time in the 'Oasis' which is basically a VR universe, much like today's internet only far better looking and all in a perfectly rendered virtual world. Upon his death the creator of Oasis sets a challenge, the winner of which inherits his fortune and full control of Oasis.
I thoroughly enjoyed this from start to finish, Just a really good fun film. The visuals are amazing, literally leaving me slack jawed at times. I'm going to score this one a 9/10.

Maze Runner: the Death Cure - You need to have seen the previous two films to have much of a clue what is going on in this one. It is set in a dystopian future where a bunch of teenagers among others are seeking to cure a virus that is slowly killing mankind....or something. It rumbles along at a reasonable enough pace but, just never really seemed to draw me in. It gets a bit more exciting towards the end but, on balance, I'm quite pleased it was only a £2 rental. Worth a watch if you're a fan of the series but, as a stand alone film, probably not worth the effort. Scrapes a 6/10 as it improved a bit as it went on.

The Shape of Water - another film I knew very little about going in. I knew that there had been oscar nominations but, nothing other than that. I wasn't sure at the start if I was going to like it. Set in 60s, some kind of creature has been found int he swamps of brazil. A mute cleaner at the facility it is kept befriends it and eventually plans it's escape. The tone seemed a little odd at first but, the longer it went on, the more intrigued I became. Standout performance by Michael Shannon. 7/10

All in all, a successful weekends viewing thumbup

Two Westerns

Apaloosa
Another hard man sheriff defending the town from a local rakish landowner, played by Jeremy Irons, assisted by his personable deputy. Along comes renee Zellweger to domesticate the sheriff and there's a bit of argy bargy and a cliched ending. Enjoyable but Renee started to grate quite a bit. 5.5/10

Bone Tomahawk
An extremely implausible story of folk being abducted by a tribe of semi-human cannibalistic troglodytes, pursued by a hardman sheriff, Kurt Russell this time, a rakish local, a man with a shattered leg and a pensioner deputy. Purely fortunate that despite being a 5 day ride away, the local Indian knew exactly where they lived. The implausibility mounts as the film progresses and there really is no logic to the plot or their ability to survive in the wilderness for 10 days or more. Bit gory in one part particularly. 4/10

They both sound good!
had to wiki Appolosa, I've seen it, it was OK.

Bone Tomahawk reminds me of Last of the Dogman, back when Tom Berenger was a star!

No, it’s really nothing like lotdm

It’s more like from dusk till dawn

I.e it’s starts out serious and very good western that turns into a pretty gruesome horror.

I’d give it a 6.5/10

Dusk til dawn is never serious and it's not a western. There's no humour in Bone Tomahawk whatsoever.

Skyscraper

Silly, stupid, unbelievable, unrealistic.

Really enjoyed it.

Although I have noticed that as a father of a 3 year old I get surprisingly emotional at kids in peril in movies now. Even though it was clearly going to be ok it still hit me a bit. Darn kids!

Watched this in the cinema many months ago now and still think about it often. Alex Lawther, yet again, is utterly brilliant in the crazy middle story.

A rare movie that I'll buy once it's out as I can see me enjoying it multiple times.

A Night in Old Mexico

Robert DuVall plays a broke former ranchowner who can't face life on a trailer park so heads for Mexico, to relive his youth. Along the way, he and his newly found "just arrived in time" grandson unwittingly end up with a sack of drug money and have to face various attempts to retrieve it by the owner, whilst partying with a Mexican hottie who, rather unbelievably, becomes attracted to DuVall because "Mexican culture embraces and respects older people".

The film descends into silliness with the two rank amateurs incredibly triumphing over the professional baddies and finding their own nirvana.

Watchable though - 5.5/10
