Pretty much!
Actually, the opening/closing credits piece isn't bad ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTZl9KMjbrU ) but some of the rest is quite "experimental".

Emptying out the recorder, I watched "Eye in the Sky" last night, which turned out to not be as good as I was hoping, but a reasonable watch. I should have read the EPG entry, that warned me about the morality content.

Also "San Andreas" the other day, which wasn't perhaps as terrible as I was expecting. Some fascinating scenarios, though I did wonder why when the water from the Tsunami came into the buildings, it didn't seem to drain away at any point. I am no expert in such things (and may just have proved that) but once the main wave has struck, I'd have expected things to drop away again leaving destruction.

Interesting, I rather enjoyed it! Not the finest of the Coens' works, but still very high quality I thought.

I'm a big fan of their version of 'True Grit', and 'Ballad' struck me as a more light hearted approach to that kind of tale.

Except the vignette of the limbless chap and the chicken - that was rather too accurate of a satirical allegory for comfort. Very effective, disturbingly so in fact.
I think the main problem was that I was hoping for another O Brother, but it was nowhere near as good. I may just have been in the wrong mood for it (I fell asleep during one of the stories) but I'm not sure I feel up to giving it a second chance.

'Er indoors is a fan of Radiohead/Thom Yorke so last night we went to see "Suspiria", the sort-of remake of a 1977 cult classic (which I haven't seen), as everyone's favourite bog-eyed crooner did the soundtrack.
Jesus wept... there was only about 10 people in the cinema, and half of them walked out - I tried to make eye contact with them and convey the message "take me with you, please!" but it was too dark, so I was there for the 2.5 hours running time.

Basically, a young dancer from the US travels to Berlin (in 1977) and joins an all-female dance company. Very early on, and rather matter-of-factly, its revealed they are a coven of witches, and most of the plot revolves around why some of the former students have disappeared, whats happened to them, and what is happening to the coven in terms of who is going to be in charge ongoing. At the same time there is a substory about an old (male) psychiatrist who suspects something is up at the dance company, and also terrorist activities across Germany.

Have you ever seen A-Level performing arts students doing desperately-modern modern dance? All angular moves and ernest facial expression? Imagine that for nearly 3 fking hours. The last 30 mins are hilariously bad, with exploding heads reminiscent of "The Fury" (1978), and it reaches peak "up-its-own-arse-ness".

Tilda Swinton plays 3 roles, for no good reason. 2 of them are behind rubber masks, so surely anyone could have played them? Maybe they just couldn't convince anyone else to be involved.

Plus points? Theres quite a gruesome scene early on where a woman is thrown around a room and contorted by an unseen force seemingly in parallel with the new girl doing her first dance - its very well done and quite hard to watch (though actually reminded me of a very similar scene in obscure 2008 horror movie "100 Feet")

Actually, that's pretty much it. 0.5/10
They were circle jerking over this on some artsy review thing on R4

Somehow I knew it would be ste. They interviewed the director, might as well have just given him a blowjob and be done.

Enjoyed it.
The BBC horor film smile

I think the starting scene with the father doing things to a human heart sets the tone for the rest of the film.

Wtf squared

Callan, verrrryyyyy creaky. Creaky acting, sets, awful fights. THere is a pretty decent car chase with a series 3 jag and a mk1 Range rover, but it's really just a long episode, very basic.
I really like that film, yes it’s of it’s time and let’s forget the bullst about the revolver just wtf
Anyway the parts where they fk up the guy who sold him it and callan liking the guy he was supposed to kill and the ‘twist’ at the end all stand out. EW is always a good watch to me, I think he was a fabulous actor.

It had it's moments. Also didn't really know how it'd end, a double-false triple bluff. biggrin

Ripe for a modern reboot, Callan.
The Matrix creators must have watched the fight with the green cross code man. hehe

I went to see A Simple Favour yesterday. I realise I may be the only person on PH to admit that. But - it's underrated. It's a dark, humorous and engaging thriller without taking itself too seriously. Lively played the psycho eccentric weirdo well and Kendrick's role as the innocent-butter-wouldn't-melt single mum hid someone equally as twisted.

I had a fun movie evening, although I did have the cinema screen to myself so I don't think many share my enthusiasm for such oddball films.

I thought it was better than that...maybe an 8.5/10......and watching Blake Lively alone is worth the price of admission. Struth!!!

Plenty of love for this film by myself and others...

A Simple Favour

A real surprise, very funny dark thriller/comedy with brilliant performances from Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively.

A rare film that ramps things up and up but knows how to end, in fact it gets better and better (and funnier) as things progress.

I'd watch it again just for Kendrick's facial reactions to whatever obscene thing she's hearing, loved it.
It came out 2 months ago in the UK though (and has basically finished its run everywhere), so no real surprise that attendance was somewhat low!

It made $90m worldwide, which is pretty solid for such a film, and went straight in at #2 at the UK box office when it was released back in September.

Buster Scruggs, yeah, well I watched that. Enjoyed its eccentricities and they way it twisted you about. I have a love/hate relationship with the Coens and this one is on the up side.
I think if some of these were on Youtube they'd be classed as fail or karma videos.
I liked the way it subverted expectations looking for twists when none are coming and leaving other things hanging.
8.5/10

A simple favour sounds good.

rlm revisit Star Trek the Motion Picture...didn't know it was flipflopping between series and film. Also, can anyone imagine a Star TRek film released today where the weapons are fired only once? biggrin

Just came on to post about this.

Watched it last night and loved it. Just loads of fun, especially the first two shorts.

The dark bits I really enjoyed too. The whole thing would be worth it, if only to hear Liam Neeson's rendition of the Sash biggrin

There was an Odeon Limitless showing of Girl In The Spiders Web this week.

As someone who hasn't seen the original Swedish versions or the American remake version, the film was pretty good. Mumbling from others weren't as impressed on the way out.

so IMO, if you want to see a version of a Bourne / Daniel Craig Bond film with a female lead, this is a good film. Possibly not so much if you've seen the other films.

It was very good, I reviewed it about 6 weeks ago when it came out in civilization wink and gave it an 8/10 IIRC

It's a very odd experience when this happens.

I saw Sucker Punch at the cinema when it came out, and at the start of the film there was a couple, and me. After a little while the couple walked out, leaving me with the cinema to myself. It felt very odd, and I felt like I was some kind of perv for sitting there watching it on my own. There was also a very strong urge to get up and walk around. smile

Think this is a brand new film not a remake, made as a cash-in sequel to the book trilogy by Stieg Larson and written by a different author:

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
The Girl Who Played with Fire
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest

I really enjoyed the 3 Swedish films and the Daniel Craig version of the first 1, shame they didn't to finish the US version of the trilogy

It's not exactly a new release here, in fact it's almost at the end of its run. But it's good to know that it has received some viewing love from others. thumbup

It earned $3000 from 25 screens in the UK last week, so maybe Silver Screen at Odeon or some sort of similar cheaper screening at another chain. Pretty common for films to resurface for a day or two after they've finished their natural run.
