He's an extremely versatile actor, and Mervin in As Good As it Gets is a great performance and a great film, it's so likeble. Think, he can be loopy as the Joker, scary as Johnny in the shining, unhinged in the aforementioned AGAIG's, and downright unlikable but still very funny AF in Anger Management. He convinces in all his roles. Another actor successful of this IMO is Johnny Depp. I hope that, what I think, is Amber Heard lying doesn't finish him off. Funny that she has previous for domestic abuse, whilst he has none.

I'd also recommend About Schmidt . Another great performance in that one.

Loophole - Martin Sheen joins Albert Finney, Jonathan Pryce and a few other recognisable faces to do a bank vault job in central London in the 1980s. It's been on one of the higher up Freeview channels recently. Not a bad film, all in all, though some terrible pain acting from a guy who looks a bit like Paul Whitehouse but isn't, when he gets injured by some random gas in the sewer. Unusual ending, too.

Blimey, I remember that years ago. Will have a search to see if it's still on.

Edit: was nn Monday but no more listings. Pity.

LOL. No, but I can see where you are coming from.

I really enjoyed it. They did very very well on what was clearly a small budget. Well written, believable, and well executed.
It had a similar vibe to Ex Machina, but even more confined and intimate.

Decided to watch Thor. I usually give this one a miss, but erm, actually enjoyed it a lot more tonight than I ever have.
It has issues, a bit choppy, some poor edits (surprising), but it's a good story even so.

Captain Fantastic

Gave it a watch, following positive noises a few pages back.

Crosses Grizzly Adams with Eastenders and University Challenge hehe

Sad - happy - anxious - chilled. A good film for the whole family (assuming a family capable of elementary academic and emotional intelligence).

A few on Amazon prime I’ve caught up on.

The Interview

Seth Rogan and James Franco (I think) play a producer and interviewer who’ve managed to wangle an interview with North Korea’s leader and the CIA want to take the opportunity to assassinate him. Franco is excellent as the interviewer, proper slimy and condescending and hilarious at times. Nails the character and it’s easy to see why NK didn’t want this film shown.
Not really into Seth Rogan films but i thoroughly enjoyed this and has proper laugh out loud moments. ‘I’ve got dick stink!’

8 nuclear missiles out of 10 concentration camps.

The Accountant

Wasn’t sure what to make of this when it came out and thought it was just another action flick with the only twist being an accountant. Whilst this is the general thrust of the movie, it does go quite deeper, dealing with autism, relationships and living with autism as an adult.

Good story line that bumbles along nicely, Affeck is an underworld accountant who decides to take a ‘straight’ job that turns into anything but. His father has instilled in him some special skills so that he can defend himself from being bullied and, well, Affleck takes that to another level. Affleck portrays his character very well indeed and definitely one of his better performances. A nice little twist at the end as well.

8 earnst’s out of 10 youngs.

Godzilla (2014)

Just been on ITV2.

Well, that was all rather silly and a bit pointless. Ultimately the human characters achieved absolutely nothing and just witnessed Godzilla fight with some kaiju. As did we.

Plot holes aplenty, not least why a helicopter would be despatched to rescue the protagonist from a random boat mere minutes before a nuclear weapon was scheduled to explode

Dr Strange

I'm a bit out of the loop on MCU films - the last one I saw was Age of Ultron. But this was on telly recently and I happened to record it, and watched it tonight.

I came into it with no knowledge or expectations - the most I knew about the character was that he does magic or somesuch.

Anyway, it was quite enjoyable, and raised a chuckle in places (not least the antics of the cape), although I thought it fell a little flat at the end.

American History X

"A former neo-nazi skinhead tries to prevent his younger brother from going down the same wrong path that he did."

I've watched this quite a few times over the years. A great film that at times is uncomfortable viewing with graphic violence. Brilliant performances from Norton and Furlong.

If you haven't seen it, you should.

BrightBurn

Evil Superhero/horror flick - some proper gruesome scenes so not for you if that's not your thing. Directed by James Gunn (Gardians of the Galaxy). I really enjoyed it, lots of wtf moments for sure.

The Lake House

You’ve got mail but analogue with real letters and without Brinkley. Keanu Reeves. Sandra Bullock. Time travel/time bending romance.

Wholesome, like a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils.

The Nines

Ryan Reynolds. Melissa McCarthy.

Nine (obvs.)

Both on Prime.
