Me too, it was obvious what was happening quite early on. I'd heard good things, but thought it was average at best.

Edit: Movie is Get Out
I honestly don't get how this got anywhere near Best Picture or all the other accolades.

I settled in expecting to be blown away by something genuinely new, but honestly I'd even put the IT remake comfortably above it in terms of mainstream horror last year.

It's well put together but there are a hundred other similar films done well enough over the years that are no better or worse than this. At its core it's incredibly generic and the pay off of what they're up to really wasn't mind blowing. In terms of inventive horror i wouldn't even put it near the top of that very specific list in the past 12 months. The aforementioned Raw is for me a much better film.

I guess, being a white male in one of the safest parts of the UK I just don't 'get it'? In that respect I guess it was just superbly well timed.

His film choices are such that if I see his name, (Nicholas Cage) in the cast I’ll avoid at all cost.
But.

I really enjoyed, “Matchstick Men”. Really great film. 8/10.
Leaving Las Vegas
Bad Lieutenant - port of call new Orleans
Joe
8mm
Lord of War
Red Rock West
Adaptation

And of course.... Raising Arizona

All worthy of praise imo.
I agree. Even an Best Actor Oscar gong for Leaving Las Vegas and a nomination for Adaption. I loved Raising Arizona. He can be a fine actor. But his film choices of late have been terrible.

I enjoyed Get Out and thought Daniel Kaluuya was great in it. But a Best Picture Oscar nomination? Nah.

The Shape of Water

If you've ever seen anything by Guillermo del Toro you'll kind of know what you're in for.
Magical fairy-tale-ish love story between two individuals.

Lots of great character parts from Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Octavia Spencer, Beautiful visuals in terms of costume, set design, lighting, colouring and water effects. Strong original score.

If you enjoyed anything like Delicatessen, Hugo, Amelie, Pan's Labyrinth you'll enjoy this. Deserves it's oscar nominations in some areas, maybe not in others.

A bubbling 9 out of 14.

Remember

A drama thriller with a few nice plot twists. A dementia sufferer is given an envelope with some money and a letter in it. He keeps reading the letter and follows the instructions.

No spoliers, a very good watch. An 8/10 from me.
Thoroughly enjoyed that. Certainly didn't see the final twist, recommended.
Watched this last night - kind of felt like a TV movie at times, but a great story.
Thanks for the recommendation.

I watched Doom (again) this weekend - No, it's no Oscar worthy film, but it's brain out fun and nonsense.

(Rosamind Pike was clearly cold on more than one occasion)

I give it 1.8 out of Pi

Wakefield (2016) Sky Cinema

A middle-aged man leaves home and spies on his family from his garage.

Worth watching for Bryan Cranston's performance, but I'm not sure what point the story is trying to make.

5/10

American Made
Tom Cruise vehicle, loosely based on the true story of Barry Seal who was recruited by the CIA* to photograph central American revolutionaries, then while there gets recruited by the cartels to smuggle drugs (then guns), then recruited by the DEA/US Government to spy on the same cartels. Hilarity ensues.
All moves along nicely, with a smattering of real footage, so may be of interest to fans of Narcos. Cruise does the happy-go-lucky grin well, and the films worth a watch.
'* Research afterwards suggests this part of the story is bks
7/10

The Mountain Between Us
Kate Winslet and Idris Elba and Bouncer from Neighbours are in the least realistic-looking plane crash in aviation history, and wind up in the Rocky mountains. It happens the day before her wedding, but even a resulting broken leg, days/weeks of malnutrition and no shower isn't enough to stop her wanting a piece of "Black Bond".
All very nice scenery though. The CGI cougar was a bit crap however.

(FWIW, if a film doesn't have a rating of 6.2 on IMDB, I won't watch it. I've found, over many years, this to a reasonable benchmark to avoid wasting my time)

Murder on the Orient Express - a truly 'all star cast', but nothing to lift it beyond 'Sunday afternoon' status. Just scrapes a 6.2.

Legend - so many opportunities to re-tell the story of the Krays in a novel way were missed in this Tom Hardy-led production. Disappointingly, it scores a missable 5.5 for me.
totally agree re: Legend. it was too "clean" for me too polished and i think the way that it was shot to accomodate hardy in both roles detracted from the getting into the film - felt over processed to me and thus less enjoyable despite Hardy's performance(s)
