Two at the weekend for me.

The Jack Black/Dwayne Johnson film Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Which I enjoyed very much, considering that I wasn't expecting much from it. Had my fingers burned too many times by prequels/sequels/reboots I suppose. This was sufficiently different from the Robin Williams film of 1995 that I forgot all about that one and just enjoyed the 2017 film for what it was.

And last night I found Where Eagles Dare on ITV4. Probably the worst war film ever, but if you forget about it being a war film, and instead watch it as a spy thriller it is utterly brilliant. Especially the scene outside the radio room where Clint Eastwood's character Lt Schaffer looks down for what seems an awfully long time at the grenade that has just been thrown at him, then he casually picks it up and throws it back. Great lines, great visuals, plot holes you could drive a Tiger tank through but no-one seems to care, and "Broadsword calling Danny Boy. Broadsword calling Danny Boy, over..."

I also spotted (Rambo: ) First Blood on the guide, so set a record on that...

Ah. OK, three films recently, not just two. I saw this one as well. I thought it was brilliant. Not so much the mutant kids at the end, as I couldn't fathom why they didn't just pool their talents to escape their evil pursuers. But the bulk of the film was a masterclass. Acting, screenplay, direction. Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman both on great form as ageing mutants in a lonely world. Stephen Merchant stole quite a few of his scenes and got some nice throwaway lines. Richard E Grant delivered in spades as the evil doctor and it wasn't until my wife started watching His Dark Materials later that I realised that Laura was the same girl (Dafne Keen) playing Lyra in the TV series.

yeah , ending was a bit of a copout - dark and grittier would have been nothing there and her being the very last mutant.

was it explained somewhere about how all the mutants dissapeared - i believe it was 2 fold (1) Charles wiped out most of the them in an accident involving his brain and the start of his degeneration and (2) Dr Rice putting mutant preventing gene chemical in corn syrup in all food products?

I watched The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in a bored couple of hours this weekend. That's two hours I won't get back. Having since read up on line I shouldn't have bothered, but the stories about Sean Connery not getting on with the director are amusing.

It has its moments, as my dad would say. But, yes, it is a bit of a mess and a pale imitation of the source material.

I like the aesthetic of the Nautilus and the car.

Jumanji: The Next Level

Enjoyable enough but for me nowhere near as fun as the last one. It takes a while to get going and Kevin Hart aside I don't think the new swaps work as well this time.
Pretty much my take on it too, watched it yesterday with my kids and they both preferred the previous one.
Enjoyed it, as said, not as impactuful as the first one, they could have done more, but it works. KH and JB get my votes, they were brilliant.

Cannonball Run II

Recorded off ITV4 the other night.

Some of the stunts have aged well. The script and acting have not.
Funny though, which is all that counts.
Outtakes are my favourite bit.

Well, its as daft as every other F&F film. biggrin They look like they had fun making it. Did any one notice the cut between filming in London and then Glasgow

Vanessa Kirby cloud9 Even if she is putting on a daft Essex accent biggrin

No idea really why Helen Mirren is there though.

Its not awful, but what do you expect really. 6 10

Masterpiece is not a term I've ever used before, but this for me is as close as it gets. To make any attempt to explain the plot would be to do the film a massive disservice, if like me you can go in blind you're in for one hell of a ride.

I spent the first hour enjoying the beautiful cinematography and wrapped up in a very entertaining and amusing story, then boom, an hour of pure tension that comes out of nowhere.

So lucky to get a screening of this at my local Odeon (it's released in February), I'll watch this again as soon as I can find another screening.

Same here smile . I had heard of it and I knew it was probably going to be the screen unseen. Apart from that I didn't know anything about it. It is a really good one smile .

Will certainly be watching out for this one, a fan of most Bong Joon-Ho stuff

It won the Palme d'Or and it's very difficult to see it not coming away with at least the best foreign language film at the Oscars.

I'm desperate to see it again!

Captain Marvel

was no where near mavel-lous (hahahaahahahaaa - i'll get my coat)

amazing how dull it was, the only good bits are with the cat !!

was this rushed to get done before endgame? indeed why did she just not smacko Thanos BEFORE endgame in one quick swoop and hey presto all is ok - and indeed after all that, even when she was in endgame, totally pointless in reality. felt like it was shoehorned in to get a superhero-female-character-in-marvel-asap-cos-disney-wants-this-right-now.

2 excellent cat fight scenes out of 10

6 Underground.

Wow, partial story / plot, many many plot holes, continuity is terrible, but it isn't half enjoyable.

Car chase / explosions / blood / explosions / people getting shot, here must have been about 500 people killed.

Alfa QF, E60 M5, Maserati QP, i think a C63 Estate (could be a C350), WRX STi, Lamborghini Urus, 488, FFRR ... some nice cars in there too.

Interesting, even Kermode said that once he's had time to process it, watch again etc... he reckons it'll end up in his top ten films of all time.

Think I'll go and have a look.

I was quite surprised that I found myself enjoying Captain Marvel - I got a bit bored of the comic book films a few years back so haven't seen a lot of them (Dr Strange, the Ant Man ones, Wonder Woman, the Avengers group ones are probably the big ones I've skipped) but this one came on Sky a week or two back and the wife was out so I thought I'd give it a go, fully expecting to get bored 15 minutes in with a load of woke pro-female nonsense.
I enjoyed it, the plot raced along quite nicely with a few twists and turns, the action was crashy bangy without the confusion of Transformers and I didn't get bored.
