Just watched it again.

Definitely in the top five films of at least the last ten years.

Now, here we have a most unprepossessing little story. OK, so it was grafted from truth. And elements which all seem to add for a lowly, yawn-fest that you might never expect to be worthwhile.

But I have to say, a damn fine job at directing and some good actors, putting in very believable performances and very close attention to detail, and with only a light sprinkling of dark comedy hidden behind some charm, can all pull something out of the hat. Jackman at his sublimest.

So, I believe IMDB have it at a 7.1.... I might even go so far as an 8...... well, no, probably only a 7.5. But, still, there are worse ways to pass the time. And when the credits rolled, there was a little error cited in the case of the real life events which made me roar with laughter....
Watched this tonight and agree that it has great performances by all. I'm a Jackman fan so maybe a bit biased. Had me thinking about it for a bit afterwards which is always a good sign 😉

Now onto Thunderball, going to make my way through all the bond's courtesy of ITV.

The Young Lions ( 1958 )

One for the war movie fans - an epic 2 3/4hrs which weaves a story of 3 soldiers in WWII with a tragic coming together at the end. The war told from the German and American sides and jumping from North Africa, Berlin, London and France.
Starring Marlon Brando, Dean Martin, Montgomery Clift, Maximilian Schell and a cameo from Lee Van Cleef.
Filmed in Black and White, it is rather dated but worth sticking with. Some good action scenes too.

Full movie on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFmubPRHlwQ

I read the book by Irwin Shaw some 40 years ago and I remember the pace built to the end leaving me breathless and always wanting to read it again. In the book, the German Officer played by Brando is a right b@stard of a Nazi but in the film he plays the part of a good German in a sympathetic manner. Pity he gets it in the end. Hardly a spoiler cos its obvious where we are going.

7 iron crosses / 10 French girl friends.

Its funny how I got here having followed a thread with Foster Brooks taking the P out of Dean Martin - so funny, and finding out that following Dino's split from his former comedy partner, The Young Lions was his first serious acting role and jolly good he is too.

The Doors - 4K UHD blu-ray.

Strong first half, loses its way a little in the second half, just like it’s frontman.

cracking set pieces though, even the final concert and the sound mix is pretty awesome, one of the best.

8/10 due to the strength of the immersion of the sound, it’s a cracking 4k picture too. I had no idea what the billy idol cameo was about tho.

On that note, saw the Roy Orbison story on Netflix.

Really enjoyable and interesting. That guy did have more than his fair share of bad luck though! What a fantastic singer/songwriter and it seems a gentleman.

As an aside, I have two Traveling Wilburys albums on CD that have been played to death over the years.

Just finished Greyhound, very immersive and almost too short for my liking.

Well worth a watch

Thought it was like a film version of game Battleships, much better than the actual Battleships movie based on the game.

All I kept thinking throughout though was why does he keep wasting food.

Short and some of it was bit all over the place, overall decent 6/10
Watched this last night. It had me hooked (as in not looking at my phone) all the way through. Not sure whether it would have worked with anybody other than TH in the lead though.

I'd go 7.25/10 not great, but a good watch.
Comic book story. Take with a sack of salt and it's pretty good. They all should have sat and watched 'The Cruel Sea' before making it, as it would then have been much better!

Agree with all of this - it's a good way to pass the time, kept me interested all the way through. The last 10 minutes could've been chopped down to 2 but that seems to be the case with a lot of recent films - they have to show all the characters living happily ever after (or not) rather than just finishing the film and letting the audience wonder what happened next.

Star Trek Nemesis.

Why in a universe with directed energy phasers and big torpedos don't they have any point defence phasers to shoot down incoming torpedoes?
Why when you've rammed the enemy ship and now its is slowly deploying it's super weapon, would you not just ram the structures for the weapon? Or nip out in an armed shuttle?
WTF have they never installed seatbelts?
What happened to away teams taking some expendable red shirts? Why the hell would your team be the entire senior staff?
Some new form of radiation that can wipe out entire planets, but you're fine standing right next to the generator for 5 minutes.
Remen's are supposed to be really tough soldiers but they're worse shots than storm troopers!
When you have an emergency force field in case the window breaks, why the hell doesn't it turn on as soon s the window breaks?

Although to be fair it's star trek film, what was I expecting but then again it was an even numbered one.

Ad Astra - As mentioned earlier, basically Apocalypse Now in space. I quite liked it, it certainly had potential but it didn't quite meet that potential. The monkeys were rediculous. 6/10

Rambo: Last Blood - Action filled last 20 minutes, rest of it terrible. 4/10

Silence of the Lambs - still brilliant. 10/10

That seems like a great summary from my memory of it too - haven't watched it in years but if the 4K is as good as you say it is! thumbup

Worst of the proper movies by a country mile, and I'm including Star Trek V. The whole movie is just full of actors who really don't want to be there.

Survival Island

A titillating tale of 3 castaways and the jealous hostility between the wife's husband and the hunky but lustful 3rd man.

More than watchable, solely for the curvaceous virtues of Kelly Brook, bouncing round in a white bikini which somehow falls off - so the plot could have been a technicality. However, it's not a bad film in itself, despite superhuman lung capacities beneath the waves.

6.5 lobsters out of 10 clams.

Palm Springs.
An enjoyable, brain switched off couple of hours. Both leads are likeable and funny and there's some decent supporting characters. Plenty of laugh out load moments.
It's basically groundhog day for the 20s but that film's a favourite of mine and the premise is worth a revisit.
