£1 houses: Britain's Cheapest Street
Discussion
All the houses look to need at least £40k (minimum) spending to make them habitable so only buyers with savings were approved.
From this episode I’m disappointed with the council for not making more effort to clear the place up and reduce crime instead of just leaving the place to rot. The crap left in the public spaces was disgusting and nothing much was being done about it. Making it doubly hard for the buyers to turn the place around.

One of them spent £60k of savings doing theirs up. £60k of savings. Surely they should have restricted the sale of these to people who genuinely needed a cheap house?
The programme said that the next-cheapest equivalent in the area was double that. Plus, not much point selling a derelict hulk to someone who hasn't the wherewithal to repair it. MitchT said:

I believe they are Muslims and it's against their religion to get a mortgage, something about paying interest?? ........ So they have put their life savings into it? A fair amount of cash to have at hand though right enough. The council appear to be failing those commited to moving into and improving the area.
I would have hoped for better organisation such that more people moved in at the same time. This would have made them feel safer.
As this didn't happen, the local authority should have put private security on the street until 50% occupancy.
I expect many of those houses got burgled whilst being renovated, due to the type who lived in the surrounding areas.

the new owners are taking a punt and will potentially own a home (further down the line) that will be worth at least twice their net investment if the streets become fully occupied. if the council were to provide security etc and guaranteeing regeneration at their cost, the houses wouldnt have sold for a quid.I would have hoped for better organisation such that more people moved in at the same time. Interesting to watch. One thing that I spotted and wanted to confirm was these houses don't look like they are on the same road but in the same area is this right? I did miss the start of the program to be honest so may of said. Did seem the council are quids in. Sell the house for £1, someone else refurbishes it then pays them £1000 a year. Surely they should do them all!

Definitely not all on the same street. The start of the programme shows an area where about half the houses are occupied amd the other half boarded up. Just to add to the thread, I lived in that area of Liverpool as a student, maybe a half mile as the crow flies away from the area reported on the show. Scousers can be great, I got pally with several locals via part time working, I found them to be a really funny and loyal bunch of people, very proud of their city and culture, if you like football they will talk to you all day. However, for 99% of people who post on here, the area in question would be considered to be horrendous. Drugs, prostitution, crime, aggro, all are absolutely rife. As a student it doesn’t bother you so much but raising a family there would be the pits.
I know Wavertree a little bit and always thought it was funny if you start at the end with the big park and Athletics club is quite nice, then as you go towards the city centre up Smithdown Rd, literally street by street it gets continually worse until you get to the Webster Triangle that is like some apocalyptic wasteland. Google street view 'Garrick Street, L7' and you can see for yourselves.
Do like Liverpool though, its a great city with nice character, a lot of the south side is gentrified and on its way up.

Even 8 wheeler tipper drivers visit it in pairs for safety....

bang on!Do like Liverpool though, its a great city with nice character, a lot of the south side is gentrified and on its way up.
the south side has been becoming gentrified more and more but its a very gradual process....!
Ha, saw this was on but didn't realist it was Wavertree. I also lived there as a student, between 2003-2006 I suppose. Never had an issue with the area, Few Red Erik's in Kellys Dispensary, dinner in Lau's or the Chippery and mooch home. I did live at the 'decent' end though, a couple of houses off Garmoyle and one the other side of the main road just off Penny Lane
