Radio 2 drivetime - another show ruined
Discussion
Have to agree the best show on the radio nationally, distroyed by the British Bias Company. They need to poke thier heads out of the republic, that is London. Real England.
Poor Simon, Even Jeremy Vile pontificating about the new Sara Cox radio show at ten, then, Jo Whiley with Simon Mayo. Simon, go to an independant, your wages are private and you can do what you choose.
Sara Cox has a buzz, she is fun, Jo is not. If we must, leave her alone in the late ( after midnight) show.
This show panders to the looney liberal left that is the BBC, which I do not recognise. It needs dismantling. Great shame a british insitution gone.

I tried listening again yesterday. I initially thought Simon had thrown a sickie as I couldn't hear his voice. Alas it is now the Jo, Jo, Jo, Jo and Simon show. Totally ruined what was probably the best weekday show on the radio.
Whilst they've dropped many great features from Simon's previous version, they've insisted on keeping the Jo "taxi" feature. I've seen a 3 legged donkey less lame.
The only redeeming thing is Sarah Cox (funny, entertaining, lively) is on four evenings later on. Did they not consider "Simon & Sarah"?
Will the BBC please put somebody who cares about radio in charge. Listen to Kermode & Mayo's Film Review to hear how two presenters work in harmony.

Whilst they have undoubtedly made a mess of this show have a listen to radio 6 it is EXACTLY what the BBC does best, intelligent broadcasting a huge diverse spectrum of music a mix of different DJs and steadily increasing its audience year on year from the (ridiculous) threat to close it down.A little less of the hyperbole please.

6Music is excellent, although Steve Lamacq's show is arguably a bit too 90s indie student (my demographic, I suppose) for a mainstream drive time audience.A little less of the hyperbole please.
Radcliffe and Maconie are superb. As a friend said, they are almost like work colleagues to her.
Why not listen to PM on Radio4 on the way home? It is actually entertaining as well as very informative.
Some of the 16:30 progs are good too.

Most of my cars don't have DAB so I have to listen to FM - otherwise it would be Planet Rock or 6Music all the way.
As the best of a bad lot on FM, I used to listen to the Drivetime show regularly and I found Mayo to be a consummate presenter - making the show an enjoyable (easy) listen without seeming to try too hard.
I caught the "Jo Jo Jo and [Simon]" show this week and turned it off after 30 mins. Ruined, almost certainly it seems because of some kind of gender bias. I don't care what their gender is. Mayo was a good presenter who happened to be male. Whiley is a bad presenter who happens to be female.
I expect the audience figures are going to take a massive hit - but it will be the fault of the listeners for being too white/male/exclusive no doubt.

I always felt that Jo deserved a show of her own. I switched from Radio 1 when she was dropped in favour of the vacuous Ferne Cotton.
However, I really don’t think that two presenters works on Radio. The exception being RadMac on 6Music. These two examples show the yawning North - South divide in Radio Entertainment.
Mayo with his crew worked OK, this just seems plain awkward.
The Rev Kate and Jason on Sunday morning have way more charisma. They actually sound like they enjoy being in each other’s company.

I loved listening to Drivetime with Simon Mayo and the team. It was just what you needed after a long day and a long drive home.
I liked Jo Whiley and her evening show although rarely listened due to the timing of the show (I preferred Stuart Marconi and Mark Radcliffe before her though).
But together Mayo and Whiley have absolutely no chemistry and even the usually smart witted Bobbi seems awkward around these two.
Will give it another week but anticipate having to find somewhere else to go.

A good show ruined for the sake of political correctness. Jo Whiley is like a frightened rabbit in the headlights, hence why Simon Mayo was paid more. I can't see it lasting long.
They are paid the same for doing the drivetime show (apparently); Simon is paid more by the BBC overall due to his film show with Mark Kermode (and deservedly so IMO; it's the only BBC-produced content I care about).generationx said:
Irrational hate of Jo Whiley for years, she comes across as smug smug smug. Yuk. Always liked the Simon Mayo show but this will put me way off.
Sara Cox on the other hand
Same here. I cannot really put my finger on why I don't get on with listening to her... But there is just something about her. Smug yes, but there is more. It's always hairy fairy emotions and feelings an it sounds a bit highbrow, but only really a thin veneer. Odd inflection as well... It just grates.Sara Cox on the other hand
It's just irrational. I'm sure she's a lovely person. But on the radio, I just can't do it.
Also - has anyone else noticed that it's now introduced as "Jo Wiley and Simon Mayo".
I haven't listened enough to see if they swap it around during alternate announcements - just struck me as odd to announce it like that considering she has been added to the lineup of his long established show.

I don't generally listen to the drivetime show as usually I'm home by the time it starts. But, I do enjoy Simon Mayo as a broadcaster and the drivetime show was good when I caught it. Jo Wiley is profoundly irritating. Assuming they decided to add a female presenter why Wiley? Does she have photographs of the DG with his knob out? I'd have gone with Lisa Tarbuck.
Lisa Tarbuck is an exellent presenter. Relevant, funny, great music and good rapore.Gassing Station | TV, Film, Video Streaming & Radio | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
