I spent ages yesterday looking for a thread that I know I've posted in, but couldn't find it, so I apologise as I know this is covered somewhere else.

I need to renew hosting for my car club web site, it's a basic site with some static pages and a few email boxes and forwards. I've got a domain, but probably will leave that where it is now (1&1) if it's easier to do so. Last year 1&1 put the price up to about £6 a month, but I took advantage of a special offer to get it for 99p per month. That's now run out and, for what we do with it, I can't justify paying £72 a year.

Trawling through some old threads I've found notes about Vidahost and TSO, are they still pretty good options? I did notice a comment about someone having a problem at TSO that took 20+ days to resolve, but I suspect that was a more complex problem than I'd be likely to get. Another club member has mentioned getting it hosted by Wordpress.

Any other recommendations, or are the above still worth looking at?

Of course, the other option is I phone 1&1 and see what they'll do to retain the site, but we're not big business and I can't imagine they'd be bothered one way or another. I will do that later.

Turns out that I can stick with 1&1 for a further year, as long as I delete my account, create a new one, choose the 99p / month package, and upload the web site again. I suspect that might be the best way to do it. It's frustrating that they still have these "brand new customers only" deals.

From the above, Vidahost is no more, having been taken over by TSO. TSO offer plenty of what we need for £1.34 per month for a two year deal. In itself that's tempting, if I can confirm that I won't have to jump through hoops again in two years time.

... but a down side is that I don't seem to be able to email TSO, as their 'contact us' page offers only live chat (no agents available), phone (but no free phone) or to open a ticket (customers only).

There are many cheap hosting deals around but if you're struggling to justify £70 a year then is it really worth the hassle of hosting a site at all? Perhaps one of the "free" services like facebook, blogger, weebly etc might be a better option?

Cheers Hantsrat, I may do that.

As to justifying the cost, we just want a basic web presence at the minimum cost, as the site is really only for basic publicity. We're a small club, don't charge much for memberships, don't have any major overheads, and so on. We do have a Facebook group, but even in our own small pool of club members, fewer than half of them want to be involved in FB so a web presence away from there is desirable.

I'm really frustrated that I can't find the other thread - I mentioned the same scenario on there, someone else posted "£72 a year is crazy money for what you need it for", and suggested somewhere else. But I can't find it now.

ETA - found the thread, it's in "Business" rather than here, but the reply I remember getting isn't there. Oh well.

I run a site for a club. There are around 140 active members. The site is not intended to pick up new members so SEO is not something I need to worry about - a bit of a relief. I use Wordpress. I have a host who charges me £40 per annum and for this he provides https. I don't ask many questions of him but he's always replied promptly, within 12 hours, when I have. I would not pay any more for hosting a small site.

If you're interested in the host, send me a PM.

Why do you need to contact them? Just sign up and off you go.

I was hoping to get an idea of whether their £1.34 per month is a special offer meaning I'll have to look around again at the end of the special offer period, or whether I can just move it and have a reasonable expectation that the price won't vary too much. As I mentioned earlier, I'm probably expecting too much of anyone to confirm their plans for 2+ years in the future.

I think a lot of the frustration is that when I signed to 1&1, their basic entry-level package was about £40 a year, and it jumped in one go to £72.

Used them for the last 8 years, no real issues. Pay for 2 years up front and you get a bit of discount. From memory, last time I renewed it was around $55 for the 2 years (around £42). I have the 'Extra' package (150GB and Unlimited Bandwidth) and I host 2 sites on it.
