I'm normally not a fan of "colourised" black and white footage but Jackson has taken this process to a whole new level. Not only has he added colour, he has also digitally cleaned up the picture quality, removed the graininess and the scratches and smoothed out the frame rate to make the movement more realistic and less jerky.

It would be nice to see some other old footage get the same treatment.

I've booked to see this at the cinema. Despite it being considerably more expensive to see than the average big-budget Hollywood blockbuster. I do hope that at least some of the profits are pumped into "good stuff" rather than lining the pockets of executives and shareholders.

One thing that is REALLY freaking me out is the poster advertising it...

...particularly the chap (Sergeant) front left. Save for the uniform and rank, he's the spitting image of a chap I served with myself. The resemblance is uncanny.

I think a lot of people are going to be shocked and surprised at how powerful this "remastered" footage is going to be. Those soldiers from 100 years ago are no longer going to be awkward, grainy, jerky images belonging to a far off time. They're going to look like your brother, cousin, son, or mate from work.

Serving myself, I've taken part in many Remembrance parades. But even when you're on parade remembering your own fallen comrades, and with those who came back with devastating injuries, it's still not fully "real" in many ways. The whole 'Act of Remembrance' started in honour of the fallen from the 14-18 War. This film, I feel, should make those men feel far more real and relevant to a modern society that sometimes forgets what it owes to past generations.

Now if only this film gets shown to those who need reminding the most...

There are a couple of parts that I find a bit "off", I can't put my finger on exactly why, e.g the footage from the BBC clip 1:15 - 1:27. Understandable, as this wasn't filmed in colour in the first place.

Still a great project and I'll give it a watch.

I was astonished at how good the footage appeared, it'll certainly make more than a few people put the whole thing into perspective.

From the short excerpts I've seen it looks remarkable; tickets booked for Tuesday evening's local showing.

Agreed.

The amount of work that must have gone into this is quite remarkable.

Looking forward to seeng this. The whole centenary commemoration seems a bit muted so far, surprising really.
Not around here it isn't, lots of centenary events happening; have a look on your council or local What's On website.

Just back. Excellent documentary film well worth seeing.
Puts a lot into perspective and emphasises the waste and futility of war...
Lump in the throat at one point..
Not a murmur from the large respectful audience..

I'd not heard about this until tonight, It looks like it's only at the cinema tonight or sunday. Isn't this getting a general release?

It's going to be shown in November on the BBC I believe.

I've also just come back from watching it and cannot believe how much it moved me. It's a very impacting and respectful piece of work, that really does convey a sense of being there. A pin drop could have been heard at the end.

Just home from this, very powerful, the colouring and tweaking of the frame rates really brought it to life. A humbling watch.
I don't have kids but if I did I would be making sure they sat down and watched this when it is shown on the BBC.
