Apparently, 8 episodes, airing on November 23 on Sky.

The original 1981 film plot ends in December 1941, the setting for the new series 1942. The storyline is split into two narratives, one based on land, the other set around the submarine. The focus will be on both a German U-boat crew and the French resistance trying to disrupt their activities.

Fingers crossed it will stand up to the quality of the original.

That's a very high bar - it's a cracking film.

The split narrative is likely to be a mistake. Were the French resistance known for their land based antisubmarine activity?

A sequel is pretty unnecessary too. What can it add to the original?

The original author did write a subsequent book, albeit it had nothing to do with French resistance.

I agree and hope it doesn't sink without trace..

If it's a steaming pile of poo the PH Submarine and WWII historians will soon depth charge it into oblivion.

The original was incredible.. "Ein blasen!!!!"

It’s so long since the original film that it will be easy just to view this as a distinct series though. Presumably it will have completely different cast and not be in German?

I loved das boot, probably my favourite war film. The character development was so good that it made me want the Germans to win.

Looking forward to it but, the trick to enjoying these, is not to compare them to the original.

I remember a series das boot from early 2000’s. It was really good. Not heard of an earlier film. Are these two, and this new series all related from same writer/ production company or am I getting them all confused?

Excellent. There is something visceral and scary about shouting "We are sinking!" etc in German..

A U-Boat just would not be a U-Boat if they spoke English..

The film and the series are the same, just different edits.
Agreed the German version is better (and it helps that I can understand it), but, unusually, the actors all did their own dubbing for the English version, so it isn’t as terrible as it could be.

Back in the day I knew a number of RN Submariner veterans from WW2 , and they were effusive as to the realism of Das Boot, in fact one went so far as to say He found it hard to watch in parts owing to it reminding Him of some very scary events in his own service.
I was told that the series was based on a sequence of events, which actually happened to a number of boats , ie, the events actually occured in WW2, but to a number of U Boats as against one, as potrayed.
I beleive that the film, The Cruel Sea , was structured in a similar manner, perhaps why thats a belter of a film as well.

As for the remake, mmmm! I have a deep suspicion, that its going to be crap, but, we shall see, as they say.

The original film was released in 1981

The TV series of 6 episodes was 1985

I watched the series with my Dad, he had been in the Merchant Navy during WW2. It is one of my most vivid memories of him, us sitting together watching this pretty harrowing bit of telly on an old b&w tv.

It was brilliantly done, but I haven't see it in ages. I remember the bolts popping off like bullets as the water pressure increased. That and one of the engineers having a nervous breakdown.

BTW If you're ever in Munich, you can visit a 1:6 scale model of the U-96 and you can walk through the interior set they used in the production.

For those interested, one of the few remaining U-boats is at Birkenhead: https://www.u-boatstory.co.uk/Pages/default.aspx
