Das Boot - Sequel TV Series
Discussion
It's not good.
The original blows it out of the water, and let's face it, it was pretty much perfect in every way so that's no surprise.
This sucks any tension or involvement out of you by cutting back to pointless and badly written scenes ashore all the time, with a naff sub plot involving the resistance. If you fast forward through all of those, what you're left with is a submarine drama without much drama, because - as it's all been done before - they chose to go with some equally ludicrous action at sea. None of the character development or gradual bonding with the crew that the viewer gets to do with the original. The CGI is mostly OK (some naff water effects as the U-boat cuts its way through the always-calm seas) but even here the original is far better, as the practical model work and rough sea / bad weather / night time scenes were infinitely better 37 years ago.
Just yer usual re-imagined / re-booted pile of crap I'm afraid.

Finished it last night - overall thought it was a decent series. I think it made a rod for its own back by being named "Das Boot", as inevitably it will be judged against the original. Ive only seen the original once, but as far as I can remember the only similarities are that submarines are involved and they manage to fix the sub and raise it from the seabed. Treated as a unique drama about naval warfare and resistance in occupied France it was good enough.

I feel the way it end. It could possibly go into a squeal?
I think they'll squeal if the ratings improve! Yeah, the "twist" at the end did seem to hint at a series 2. Personally... I had an inkling that Hoffmann survived being cast adrift, and I was hoping that when the sub returned to port and the mental captain gave his side of the story, the base commander would say "well, that's funny because Hoffmann is alive and well here", and that the entire crew who betrayed him would be lined up against the wall and shot. That would have been a suitably bleak ending!
If we assume Hoffman was picked up by a US boat and brought to America, im not sure why hes free to wander around - surely he'd be a POW?
Not sure how to interpret what happened to Simone and her brother - they don't seem to have run, and the Gestapo boss didn't die from his injuries (though seems to be a bit mental damaged), so surely its a matter of time until Simone (at least) is arrested. I don't think they had anything on her brother though.

Just watched episode one, recorded episode two, I’ll do my best, and give it a go, but if it’s in the same vein as ep one, I may give up on it altogether. The original blows it out of the water, and let's face it, it was pretty much perfect in every way so that's no surprise.

As Damien said, the original, (black and white?), blew it out of the water, great pun.
The original was so much more visually exciting, e.g., when Jurgen Prochnow, as the captain, in the conning tower in heavy stormy weather, sights another of his wolf pack, “DORT! Das is Thomsen!” (THERE! That is Thomsen!”), and the crew, discussing their imminent docking in an Italian port, “We’ll have fun with the macaronis!”
This all seems like a cheap imitation after the original.
