EastEnders set revamp goes £27m over budget

The BBC project to replace and expand the external set of EastEnders will now cost £27m more than originally planned.
The original 2015 forecast for the scheme was £59.7m, but the revised budget is now £86.7m.
A National Audit Office (NAO) report concluded that "the BBC will not be able to deliver value for money... in the way that it envisaged in 2015".
The BBC said the project was "large" and "complex", adding that there had been "challenges on the way".
The original completion date for the project - called E20 - was pushed back from October 2020 to May 2023.....continues

I can’t believe they really envisage that it will still be running in 2023 and assume many years after that to recoup the cost of the new set

I despise Eastenders.

However the 2015 F1 finale averaged 2.6m viewers over BOTH sky & BBC

Eastenders averages 5m night after night after night

I suspect they sell East Enders around the world and the show returns a profit. They largely just pay for the rights to F1.

On an awful soap that 10 million viewers regularly watch in the UK, and which generates millions of quid in worldwide sales, you mean?

Is it really a big deal if they want to refresh the set once every 30 years?

I've never watched Eastenders, but I'm afraid I can't really get outraged about this one.

I saw that article on the bbc this morning. Initially I misread it, I was already going “how fking much?!” at £27m then realised that was just the overrun, not the total!

The total, £86.7m as of the latest revised budget, is over 575,000 times the annual TV licence.

But it's a set that was originally designed to last two years - so we've had almost 20 years of 'free' out of the last one.

87m - Eastenders audience has peaked at well over 10m a number of times over the last 20 years. Who knows how much they've sold it for over the years.

As per a couple of other posts - I really can't see how we can get our knickers in a twist over this one?

I'm another that doesn't get the noise over this.

But then I don't get most of the "outrage" that gets reported upon!

In fact the thing that outrages me most is how much time is spent reporting on outrage because of a few people on twitter furious

EFA

Given that £5billion is raised a year from the licence, it seems like small fry!

Leave it owwwwt!

For the numbnuts:

You have £100m do you:

A) spunk it on a bought in TV show that will generate £100m + in losses.

Or

B) invest it in a show that many more people seem to enjoy, employs far more people and pays an enormous salary bill, can be sold worldwide and in all generates a profit?

But unfortunately this is a story that contain key numbnut trigger words such as BBC and London.

But at least if this thread gets properly going we can have a game of Numbnuts Bingo as other trigger words such as diversity, left wing bias or license fee crop up.

Why build a new set? Last time I watched it looked like it was filmed in a filthy slum.

If they are doing it to keep authenticity with the real east London, surely all they needed to do was board-up the pub.

Or turn it into a mosque and have kids on mopeds stabbing each other while dodging piles of vomit from the previous night.

I’ve watched it on and off for years sure there are great dramas to view and a soap isn’t in the same league but it’s 4 night a week year round vs a 6 part GOT etc plus I’m running out of box sets to watch now that are any good

And of course get all of the houses renovated, basements added, lofts converted and put on the market for £2m. The locals would all move out and the square would be dead during the day as most folk work in town. No one would go in the pub either, unless it was buggy friendly then it might get used by the nannies for lunch or after nursery drop-off breakfasts.

Doesn't make as good a TV show though.
