Hello all, new to the forum!

Collected my Dec 17, 718 Cayman at the end of September from an OPC. Car was bought with 3,500 miles and now sitting at 5,000. Originally, I was going for a 2015 981 2.7, however that fell through and ended up in a 718.

This is my first Porsche, I have previously owned an M235i, Golf R32 and an E46 M3.

Purchased from an OPC, details below :

Cayman 718 2.0
Guards Red
Manual
20inch carrera sport alloys
Sports exhaust in silver
Sports Chrono
PASM
GT sport steering wheel in leather
PCM with Apple CarPlay as per later cars

A fairly light spec but had all the 4 options that were ‘must-haves’ for me. However some things I would have liked:

Folding mirrors
PDC
Bose
Heated seats (around this time of year)
Auto wipers
Dual climate control

Have had autos for the last 4 years, however was open to manual/PDK. Only do around 8k per year and I do think the manual box suits the car.

Some thoughts on the car 1500 miles in:

Positives

Car feels as fast as my M235i (325bhp and 325 ft lb torque). The BMW is a good 150kg heavier which is probably why.

I think it looks stunning from all angles and I just love Guards Red!

Car is beautifully weighted and once the P-Zero’s are up to temperature, grips and handles incredibly well.

Rides surprisingly well with 20’s and PASM, quite happy doing longer journeys in it.

More economical than expected, have seen 40+mpg on slower motorways journeys.

The slow-slung driving position makes it feel like an event every time I drive it (even slowly) a criticism of my M235I.

Some Negatives

Even with sports exhaust, I am not impressed by the sound. I am aware it is much louder from the outside but it really doesn’t compare with my M235i. It is not half as bad as people make out however, doesn’t compete with my previous cars!

The grinding when manoeuvring at slow speeds. Hard to believe this is ‘normal’.

Occasionally the car will not connect to Apple Carplay, even when I disconnect and reconnect my device.

Drivers window squeaks when dropping - must get this seen to.

Overall I am delighted with the car and enjoying Porsche ownership. Enough rambling, some pictures below...

Congratulations, mostly sounds great!

But what’s this grinding noise? Who told you it was normal?

Sounds like Ackermann effect.

Perfectly normal.

It'll be Ackerman effect, which i found very pronounced when I had a 981 fitted with Pirellis, still there but not so prevalent when I got a newer 981 with Goodyears.

OP I would recommend switching from the Pirellis when they wear out - they were my least favourite OE tyre and other options will make the car even better to drive.

Go for the Mich MPS4S. Better tyre and no 'grinding'.

Thanks for the replies. In hindsight, grinding probably wasn’t the best description. It is the Ackerman effect as mentioned.

For any of you with PSE, do you find that exhaust note is very muted from inside the car? Friends/colleagues have commented about the pops/bangs/cracks when they have heard it from the outside. I can barely hear it from the inside.

Will absolutely be changing the Pirelli’s for Michelin’s. Always had Michelin’s and found them to be outstanding.

How quickly do you think I will get through a set? I would say they have quite an easy life with me driving.

I'm only seeing one pic which is tiny and of the steering wheel.

You'll probably wear out the back tyres in about 5 to 6000 if you try. The fronts will be virtually unused by this time.

If you leave the car in sport it will allow you a slight slip angle before it gets involved and spoils the fun.

I've never experienced the 4 pot. My 6 pot with pse makes plenty of noise.

I have heated seats and heated steering wheel too. Although to be honest I only use them if I'm lowering the roof.

The blower on the 981 has a well known fault where it just doesn't work if the car hasn't been used for a couple of weeks. There is a thread on here about it. Porsche won't admit it's a fault. You may have the same blower so bare that in mind and figure out how to access it. Steamed up windows in this weather makes the car unusable.

The 981 has a comfort pressure setting for the 20 inch tyres. I think standard is 33 and comfort is 30. It might help with the Ackerman thing - not sure. It's worth a try anyway for general day to day driving.

I think if you click on the pic, you can scroll through them? Certainly I can.

Having driven a 981 with PSE, they do sound great.

smile yes, Ackerman = normal, grinding not so much!!

There are lots of threads and YouTube videos on the topic. As has been said above some tyres are better than others, i’d go for Michelins next time.

To be accurate it's lack of Ackerman geometry that is the problem - so that the inner front wheel turns more since it must describe a smaller radius circle. It is most noticeable at low temperatures and will be much less of an issue in the summer. At temperatures in single figures the only real solution is a set of winter tyres.

As above, the front tyre noise goes away in warmer weather, I’ve really noticed it again in mine now the temps have dropped.

I didn’t spec Bose, have been in Bose equipped ones, albeit Boxsters and didn’t feel like there’s any difference. Only thing I noticed was the sound in the Cayman had more presence behind me, maybe because of additional speakers or their placement. I don’t know may be wrong about that?

I’ve got the folding mirrors, not essential imo. Had a BMW before with those but it included a dropping mirror in reverse which you only get with the memory pack on these.

Sports exhaust doesn’t make much difference when turned on and off. I can hear burbles and quiet bangs, but that’s all more audible in a Boxster with the roof down.

Auto wipers aren’t the best, again better in my BMW.

I was getting the Acker effect even in hot weather but after my car went in for warranty work, the OPC did a full geo adjustment and it went away, only to return in the current cold temperatures. I will be replacing my P-Zeros with Michelin when I get the chance.

I don't have the sports exhaust but when I had loan cars (admittedly Boxsters) I will admit it sounded better at start up with the Sports exhaust but I ended up turning it off a lot of the time as it just droned. I would like a bit more drama and noise but the expensive sports exhaust doesn't provide it. I watched a vid which supposedly featured the new Cayman T and it did sound better so perhaps Porsche have something up their sleeves.

Firstly congrats!

Everyone’s responded on most of your points, accept the Apple Carplay (I love it, but most people think it’s a gimmick). I’ve had that exact same problem and suspect there is a software issue in the car. The problem seems to occur when the headunit hasn’t hard reset (ie porsche and Cayman logo don’t come on the main screen when you start up). If you hold the off button in for 10 seconds then release it will reset the unit and the connection will be restored and stable. Of course you will need to do this if the head unit doesn’t turn off completely next time - ie it turns off but I think it simply goes to sleep when you turn he ignition off rather than a hard reset of that makes sense.

That's a nice choice op, most of the sound bashing comes from the 2.5, the 2.0l isn't so offensive and the manual is a great choice i've enjoyed driving them when mine has been in the dealer.
