Cellar steps

That is my cellar stairs. Even when I occasionally sweep them they're never clean enough to walk on with just socks.

I've put the washing machine in the cellar and underestimated how annoying it is to put shoes on just to get washing in/out and also the price for dropping a white shirt is now that it almost certainly has to be rewashed.

So... I was planning on cleaning them up and putting a decent mortar bed down on the treads and then putting on some cheap flagstones cut to size. This way the gaps can't refill with muck and they'll be much easier to keep clean.

If I do it on every step each riser will still be effectively the same height.

The cellar isn't very damp at all and certainly not on the steps.

Have I missed anything or shall I get on with it? Or does anyone have a better idea?

Level it out with sand and cement and put some cheap stair carpet down.

Clean them up, repoint then paint with a clear brick sealer. Lots of different types on the market and hopefully wont make the steps slippery for socks/bare foot

I would either paint them with unibond or similar, and the walls or cut and fit some nice oak window sills?

Hmm i would be careful of raising the height of the treads too much by introducing oak sills/ flags etc. What is the head room over each step? Will you be banging your head?

Assuming it’s not damp I’d stick a roll of underlay over them.

Except the top and bottom ones. I work in construction and see this a lot!

Your best bet is almost certainly a primer and then an epoxy floor paint, definitely a non-slip one.

Stiff brush down, remortar & then seal it thoroughly would be worth investigating IMO
