Just taken delivery of some nice dark grey PVC floor tiles for my small double garage.

I expected them to be a little softer than they are and a quick test of walking on one tile straight on the concrete floor makes more of a “tally” noise than I expected.

Some posts from way back seem to suggest using that v thin laminate underlay helps to dampen the sound. Anyone done this? Make much difference? Have any negative effects?

(I could have ordered samples but I figured they’re all much of a muchness.... Oh and I’ll speak to the manufacturer as well.)

Cheers!

Hi - I just did this, and put down that weed suppression fabric from the garden centre first, cheap, but gives you a layer between the tiles and the floor - works a treat!

Cheers

Are the tiles completely smooth underneath? Or do they have a grid pattern moulded in to them?

They have a grid pattern....

Any particular reason?

My initial thought would be a few blobs of silicone under each tile

yyy

Completely smooth tiles underneath will tend to click as you walk on them.

Those with a grid pattern beneath of no more than 1mm depth are supposed to provide lots of little air cushions to stop noise. They also conform better to minor level fluctuations.

Fab..!

Will lay the weed fabric and then tiles on top. Will have to do and will be way better than the concrete and worn out paint..!

That's a really smart solution! I'll remember that for future projects. Genius!
