Just watched the first ever episode of revamped Top Gear from circa 2003.

They've come along way. Hammond first piece to camera was done with the camera directly above him, he had to look straight up, not even sure if that was a deliberate piss take on his height.

The music was terrible too, it's actually come quite a long way.

With that fat bloke (Jason Dawe?) that they quickly got rid of.

If you're watching on Dave they have to change the music.

Old episodes aren't anywhere near as refined. The lack of HD makes a big impact instantly.

It's surprising how many things aren't as good as you remembered. laugh

That's the one, can see why he didn't last.

There was a bit with Hammond and there was a huge rain drop on the camera lens obscuring atleast a third of the image and they just left it in.

They are still really watchable though, Clarkson hasn't changed a bit, apart from looking ancient now.

I've just rewatched the latest series with Harris, McGuiness and Flintoff. I have to admit I really enjoyed it.

Chris Harris is in fact really good, he seems very natural in front of the camera now and his segments are as good as anything Clarkson, Hammond or May ever managed. The bit about the ground effect Lotus was brilliant (bear in mind I have absolute zero interest in F1 or single seat racecars).

Paddy McGuiness is great because he brings a lot of energy to proceedings, he is capable of fronting the show singlehandedly, and he is great at things like the live studio elements which were awful for the last few series. His everyman persona is a good mix with Harris's car geekery and stops the show from being too nerdy

Freddie Flintoff isn't that great in front of the camera, but fills the sort of Guy Martin/affable daredevil role quite well. The bit with the Icelandic off road racers was superb.

Get there very early, long before it says on the ticket to arrive. They over subscribe the tickets for filming, and I once arrived at the time on the ticket, only to be turned away.

Wear very comfy footwear, you'll be stood on your feet for hours. Avoid stripey shirts and anything with massive logos.

At the weekend, after liquor had been taken, some non-car-nut friends of mine asked me what TG was like these days.

I explained about the Chris Evans era, about Chris Harris and MLB, then literally as I was explaining it, I recalled it was now presented by Freddie Flintoff and Paddy McGuinness, and for a moment I became quite distraught.

It's like I'd managed to forget until it all came horribly back again. hehe

Cheers, what time would you suggest?

I'm not sure what time filming is, but I'd suggest getting there a couple of hours before you need to be. Take a flask and a good book.

Last time I arrived at the time it said to on the ticket 'arrival from...' - and I was too late.

It’s 12 for 12.30 filming so will aim to be there for 10 in that case. Thanks for that.

You'll just be parked up on hard standing by the 'traffic lights' in the middle of the airfield... So dress warm, and do take a flask and a book.

There's normally a refreshment van, but go prepared.

Did you find it a good day out?
It’s going to be a possible 4hr drive each way for me...

Its interesting to watch the process... Bit of a luck of the draw what kind of episode you get, if it happens to be a week where they're screening a special for instance, you'll be in the studio, they'll film the opening and closing of the show, then you'll literally just sit and watch the VT for an hour - if you're travelling that far i'd want to make sure its a proper episode.

I haven't been to a filming in the post CHM era, so can't really say what its like, as the whole production crew is different now.
