After listening to the Smith and Sniff podcasts it's also increasingly obvious how much of a role Richard Porter (aka Sniff Petrol) played in everything too. Between the three of them (Clarkson, Willman and Porter) they came up with some absolutely fantastic ideas and got the mix between entertainment and cars spot on. TG now seems to be focusing on entertainment, with the automotive side a bit of an afterthought.

I still think it's the best lineup since CHM, and it's still a good way to veg out in front of the TV for an hour, but it is just a shadow of what it once was.
Generally agree, it's clear that the driving force for ideas were JC and RP, although it does seem that JC did most of the talking in the brainstorming ideas planning meeting at the start of prep for each season. It's also clear there were a tonne of ideas which never saw the light of day, including some where footage had been shot.

Others produced ideas which were developed, indeed one of the most memorable incidents came from an original very short Richard Hammond sentence which went something like "I want to drive fast, really really funking fast." That led to a jet car, a crash, an air ambulance and hospital. And JC, AW, JM, and RP hanging around in Yorkshire feeling utterly miserable until they saw RH sitting up in bed and trying to bum a cigarette.

What seems to be missed now is a team of writers willing to sweat blood and tears until they'd crafted something just right. CH is a good writer, but for paper, maybe not scripts.

You're kidding, of course, automotive was always subliminal to entertainment - smashing cars up, dropping them from great height and the utterly appalling Transit hovercraft or tragic CGI camping or caravanning fires. Shocking vat of crap at times.

I follow Cletus McFarland on YouTube and have just seen that the top gear boys are heading out to tampa to have a joint collaboration at the freedom factory in tampa.

Some seriously powerful cars in their fleet these days!

I've not watched it, but as this thread shows, either you do, or you don't.

If you don't, they are a curate's egg. If you do, they are fking marvellous and anyone who says otherwise is a bd.

You suspend your critical facilty when watching these shows. Its only when someone does a parody you can see how odd it all is.
My favourite is I thing a harry and paul sketch of the monty python team.

We watched the Christmas special last night and goodness me it was dire. We kept watching hoping it would get better but gave up during the Pictionary bit, which has to be one of the the worst Top Gear features ever. Self indulgent rubbish.

I didn’t watch it, first time I’ve ever not watched a new episode of TG. Looks like I’m not missing anything.

Wow, how sad must your life be? That Transit hovercraft bit had me struggling to breath at times, one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen on telly. Childish? Yup biggrin

Phoenix nights and “life’s too short” are two of the funniest programmes I’ve watched.

If honest I never watched Phoenix Nights back in the early 2000s. Only watched both series a month a go :-) Was quite funny and can understand why it was so popular.

Where did you watch that? I've been trying to find it for years. Absolute comedy gold as I recall it.

That suggests one of us has had a sad life but I'm not convinced it's me, TBH...
