What is clear is that a lot of people on here don't like the Disney Star Wars films. In that case, why persevere with them then? Why waste hours watching YouTube films and writing stuff about something as inconsequential as a sci fi film series.

i think it was always going to be difficult balancing trying to get new characters in and still aiming for a wide ranging audience - for sure JJ got it right on the most part for TFA - far better than Lucas ever did with his prequels - but it all falls apart from me from that point on - sloppy writing, stupid plots, unnecessary squeezing of one-liners and creating a major film - and in reality films we didnt really need nor cried out for - did we really need a Rogue One or SOLO - could the efforts have been more in line with how the Mandalorian is panning out - totally new characters in the same Universe giving depth and bredth - instead we get a creepy CGI Tarkin, Leia - a SOLO we didnt really recognise or enjoy, etc etc etc - its always going to feed a divsive atmosphere.....

Exactly this, I've been a fan since I saw the OT but there is only so many times you can watch them. I like the universe Lucas created so wanted something new set in that universe. The fact that they've now screwed it up twice, once with the prequels and now with these annoys me. It really shouldn't be that hard to make a decent Star Wars film.

It depends what you want really. I agree with the Times, that Rogue One is the best of all the films, it has way more depth and emotional heft than any of the others in my opinion. But then I've read people saying that they don't like Rogue One. You can't please everyone.

As for this misuse of characters, my appreciation of Darth Vader, Boba Fett and arguably Han Solo isn't affected by the lame backstories they concocted for these three. BTW I quite enjoyed Solo, mainly because of Woody Harrelson, Paul Bettany and Donald Glover, but it wasn't an especially good film.

Agree with Solo, it was a decent heist movie and the supporting cast where brill, just a shame the lead actor was pretty much a charisma free zone which is surely the whole point of Han Solo?

this is the thing with me, they have all this time to produce these movies and they pick an unknown who has to have on the job acting lessons (according to internet) for one of the most iconic roles in star wars - they should have waiting for de-aging tech and used Harrison Ford - instead they ploughed ahead, changed directors and reshoots and thought "ah well, lets shove it out anyway cos it got a star wars name to it and we can still make tons of cash"

I agree with this. It mixed new and old reasonably well, set up a few interesting characters and a new story to tell. Ok, the Rathcar bit was a bit odd, and it was essentially a re-run of new hope but I actually enjoyed it.

TLJ, not so much. And this looks like a disaster in the making.

Solo was fun but not really needed.
R1 was ace, one of my favourites. It showed that you don't need known characters in a Film to sell it and Star Wars can do 'dark' and no-one objects.

Granted on the Rogue One dark themes/tone - no one complained about that ....

The first thing that has got me a tiny bit excited (or even interested) about Episode IX - the Duel of the Fates music from Episode I (one of the best film scores ever in my opinion) is in this TV spot
https://youtu.be/bjdjyvnOGtg
It probably won't be in the film but it's nice to see it get some love!

Agree that music is bloody awesome and Star Wars trailers are soooo good, if only the new films matched up to them.

Listening to the radio news earlier, they said there was very strict security during the showing!

I've never seen anything in any of the other films to suggest this wasn't the case. Although you'd need quite a big expensive ship to do it, so Death Star/Starkiller base superlasers would probably be a more sensible option (for a given value of sensible).

Most droids in Star Wars seem to be subject to Asimov's Laws, with the obvious exception of the Battle Droids and IG88 shoot So C3P0 probably couldn't fly a suicide mission as it might interfere with his programming.
There are plenty of droids in the Star Wars universe killing. I believe there was a whole war with them.

Anyway the big expensive ship part.

Science says no. Energy and mass increase with speeds.a small ship traveling at light speed will pretty much destroy anything.

Even x wings have hyperdrive. They can reach out and touch most places look at luke zooming around everywhere and obi one.

Anyway. Whatever it was just silly. Luke there is a new super weapon on this planet. Have you got the coords? Yes why. I’ll just Bluetooth them into this Y wing. Cheers.

Up till recently I had no interest in this film beyond how well it's numbers do. But after chatting to a bloke who was on set a few months ago my interest has been piqued again.
I reckon I;ll still wait till the ones on here who's word I trust give their verdict

Usually I stay spoiler free for these but since they pretty much lost me with TLJ I'm not so fussed so I've been reading up on it, especially the stuff about the screen tests and if half of what I've read is true, I think I would have walked out too.

I hope they have changed some of the story elements in the last minute re-shoots otherwise this is going kill the franchise IMO.

I've read the same spoilers and I'm a bit wary of them if I'm honest - they seem exactly the type of plot points that would get the fans angry so if I wanted to get some more internet traffic to my site and needed to make up some plot point, they are exactly the kind of thing I would say.

I don't think that works these days, and not with the Fandom Menace. Rise of Skywalker hasn't had the trend coverage that might once have been expected of a Sw film. Disney/Lucasfilm/KK have deliberately antagonised and attacked fans in recent years and it has hit them really hard with blowback, I don't see them releasing stuff that they know will stir the hornets nest further.

Indeed, this was a wonderful gesture by Disney/Lucasfilm and particularly Bob Iger who apparently stepped in to make it happen.

It's the same Hospice my Mum was in, so that pulled my heart strings further. Amazing, that a small hospice outside Pompey would make such news and get so much publicity for this cause that Disney did it.
