Following on from the 'Good till the end' thread.

I watched the last Big Bang Theory at the weekend, and will be watching the last Game of Thrones tonight. I've avoided all spoilers, but I have read reviews have been 'mixed', which is usually polite for "fans didn't like it".

I think it's always hard to end a good series well, as Steven King just tweeted, words to the effect of, it's hard to end a good series, because however good it is, fans don't really want it to end.

It seems to me that most TV series hang around a series or two, too long and by the end we're just glad they have ended, some get cancelled too early or worse between series, some have built up so much hype over the years that it could only ever been an anti-climax and some, don't so much end, as stop, either they couldn't come up with something great, or were hoping they might get a last minute extra series.

The only series that springs to mind that ended well is The Wire, all loose ends tided up, plus this sudden realisation that despite all the drama over the past 6 years, life just carries on, as fked up as it ever was as if it never happened.

The last episode of The Americans was just perfect. A great way to wrap up a brilliant series.

Sopranos divided people but I thought it was perfect. One last time, it treated the audience with complete respect.

Breaking Bad springs to mind. Not just the last episode, but the whole final season was near as damn it perfect.

I thought The Shield was the best ending of any long running series I've ever seen.

I think Voyagers ending was much better.

Convenient plot device used... but it was always going to have to be, given the story.

IMO the final series was a bit strained and empty in places, but the last episode was enjoyably elegant in its execution and simplicity at the end.

TNG was a good ending agreed. Voyager didn't seem to know when it was going to end and crammed too much. Really needed a reunion of the cast and their familys etc.

Always thought a voyager movie about rescuing neelix would have been good.
You could have had Janeway and co going to steal the uss voyager except they get busted by starfleet but starfleet understand what it means to "the famliy" and actually allow them to take the ship. Would be a cheeky nod to the search for spock.

Agreed. Comedy all the way until a brilliant switch to incredible poignancy.

Blackadder Goes Forth - Goodbyee
The Sopranos - Made in America
both these stand out as exemplary endings, both provoke discussion today, many years later.
Those two are on a high echelon, other series have good endings.
Hmm, Dad's Army actually, that belongs up there with those two.

First thought I had, too. So simple, yet devastating.

Though I think Blackadder does win the thread.
