Paths of Glory.
Excellent WW1 staring the late Kirk Douglas.
Lesser known? That'll be the Stanley Kubrick classic that is the Paths of Glory...

Lesser known than some of the films being mentioned so far.
It is a highly regarded film and I would certainly not class it as being "Lesser Known" - especially if you know anything about the history of film making and the work of Stanley Kubrick. It's a bit like saying that "2001: A Space Odyssey" is a bit of a lesser known sci-fi film..
Never heard of it. hehe
I've seen 2001 though, didn't think much to it if I'm honest but enjoyed The Shining. Kubrick can be a bit marmite.

I was monty's double

on bbc2 now
I watched 10-15 minutes of that today while channel surfing, and was a bit taken aback to see a decent British actor, Patrick Allen, playing an American colonel, in charge of a group of US soldiers forming a kind of honour guard for the arrival of Field Marshal Montgomery in Algiers.
Nothing wrong in that, but his only concession toward being American was to keep adding the word period to the end of sentences, and from what I could hear, not attempting an American accent at all.
Not very convincing if he was supposed to be playing an American I thought.
Yes his accent was terrible. Not a bad film really, although the kidnap attempt plotline was a bit silly.

You could have played movie bingo with all the cast members from British 1950s films. John Mills, Sid James, Michael Hordern, Marius Goring, Leslie Phillips, Cecil Parker to name a few. And you just can't have a 50s British war film without Sam Kydd.

'The Hill' from 1965 with Sean Connery, Harry Andrews, Ian Bannen, Roy Kinear and Ian Hendry, about a British POW camp for insubordinate British soldiers. Well worth a look....

One of my favourites. Ace cinematography too!
And another vote from me...one of my all time favourites. Never shown on TV now, maybe as there's a mention of the N word in one scene, although that should be easy enough to edit out these days.

Especially as Ossie Davis steals just about every scene he's In. It's a really good film.

For Whom the Bell Tolls (Spanish Civil War)
More of a love story if I'm honest, but it's tremendously moving if you give it a chance.

Good film, however the real story of that rescue ( yes it really happened well sort of) would have been a lot lot better.
I think one guy who went in after him won the medal of honour.

Ahh yes! Excellent film, I also rather like (in the same vein), the one with Christian bale, and another one with Luke Wilson.

We Were Soldiers

Battle of La Drang. Mel Gibson as Major Someone (!). Can't recall the name but it's a great movie (the book is even better).

Wasn't it his brother, Owen Wilson?

"Behind Enemy Lines" is the film I am thinking of.

"Windtalkers" is the Christian Bale one, if my memory serves me right.

AH yes! the blond WIlson! I typed the wrong name.
Windtalkers didn't sound right, I wikied it, that's the Nic Cage stealing Indian thunder name...should have been a film about the Navajo fella, not the fking bodyguard...stupid.
Rescue Dawn is the one

A Peckinpah movie. Coburn played Steiner IIRC.

Just remembered three more - The Virgin Soldiers, Play Dirty and Too Late The Hero, the latter two starring Michael Caine.
