Brett was Holmes IMHO. Rathbone started ok but when the films moved into the modern world and became WWII propaganda films they just felt odd.
Pedant mode - was it not WW1?
No, the 3rd film he made as Holmes starting the modern twist was trying to find a fictitious Lord Haw Haw character spreading Nazi propaganda in 1940s Britain - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherlock_Holmes_and_... others continued the modern style, for example Holmes going over to the USA to find a missing bomb sight designer.
I think Brett was the quintessential Holmes for me too, although Rathbone is my favourite. It's a bit harsh to call them propaganda films though. They were doing their bit to raise morale and sell war bonds. Both Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce had fought in WW1 as well. Bruce had his legs shot up by machine gun fire & was medically discharged. Rathbone was awarded the Military Cross and lost his brother in the war.

Thanks from me too. Some quite intelligent comments below the video too, which is by no means a given on Youtube!
