I presume we're not going to get into discussing it properly before it's readily available in the UK on June 22nd?

Compare it to "Encounter at Farpoint". 1st episodes are rarely the best.

Just to make it fair on everyone?
Happy to wait. Might just then start watching from the beginning again then too.

Problem is because it's set on the Enterprise, so called fans are going to moan that it doesn't look exactly like it did on the TV series made over 50 years ago.

Personally, I can't wait!
I think most people can accept that duplicating the 1960s, low-budget, visual look of TOS wouldn't fly in 2022.

The issue will be if they try to feature technologies more advanced than what we saw in TOS and even TNG, as Discovery did when it was set around the TOS era. Hard to believe that Starfleet had near-instantaneous-to-anywhere-in-the-universe jump drives, time travelling battlesuits and sentient borg-like AIs even before Kirk and Spock were flying around in the Enterprise.
When Discovery first started there was considerable complaining about the aesthetic. Don't get me wrong, I was disappointed as well, but it was much better than the 2009 Star Trek film look.

Two years ago when I wrote the quoted comment we had watched seasons 1 and 2 of Discovery, which were quite good. Things like the holograms and touch controls were easily explainable with a little imagination. Season 3 was when it went downhill and season 4 was the worst.

Let's hope - though I didn't warm to any of the characters, to be honest. A distinct lack of any charisma and of course a female heavy cast, as you would expect.

So far, but they are filming season 5 already.
The ad looks like it's going to be lots of wistful staring and hugging.
Going to give that one a miss.

The graphs makes you wonder why they are even considering another season.

Ouch...Yeah it does. As an Enterprise fan, it annoys me that got cancelled after 4 seasons despite the acting and scripts being far better quality than Disco, which gets a 5th season despite wide indifference.

98 episode of enterprise though... I doubt Discovery will get anywhere near that.

As for SNW, it has the potential to be better than the other kurtzmann treks, but the writers still dropped a couple of plot clangers per episode.

Pike knows when he dies from his time crystal experience in STD. This gets labored throughout the pilot. Fine, but now he's plot armoured for the whole run of SNW presumably. I always thought he just got melted a bit and became a mobile semi-vegetable dalek, rather than outrightdying, but I dont know or care much about TOS.

Amazing what you can reverse engineer looking through a telescope. that was a major wtf for me.

and did they beam down a new retina for spock? what was that all about?

Not necessarily plot armoured, although the thought did cross my mind too. A theme they are playing on is ‘what if you future isn’t fixed in stone? Can you change it?’

And they beamed a drug onto Spock’s eye. The drug that caused the physical changes to look like the aliens was wearing off. It was a top-up.

Two episodes in and this is great. Proper mystery of the week sci-fi, and I already know and care more about the new characters than I do about the bland personality vacuums in Discovery.

They seem to have gone back to the original Star Trek concept, and so far no sign of any WOKE infection. thumbup

Second episode was good as well - let's hope it continues like this and doesn't turn into a shambles like Discovery.

Thanks for the clarification.
instantaneous genetic eye mutation droplets is pushing it. There's vaguely coherent scifi medical science, and then there's magic... At least no one proclaimed the power of math people! thats one step up from STD

We watched the first 2. I like the cast but the Mrs was instantly out because "Pike's woman looked too young"

On the other hand, the Kahn relative made up like drummer will do whilst cara gee is off the air.

I’ve seen the first two episodes.
It’s a major step up from Picard and Discovery (to be haven’t bothered with S4 of that drivel)
The one and done episodes make a nice change and I can see myself dipping back in and rewatching favourites in a way you just don’t with a continuing narrative.
it’s not without it’s issues though. The musical communication was a good idea, but they didn’t really explain how they worked out how to use it. Suddenly they just knew..
They had to make time for the shoehorned in baddies that the plot didn’t really need. I guess you need a bit of pew pew for those with a short attention span.
These are fairly minor quibbles when the absolute disaster that was S2 of Picard is taken into consideration.

So far a good start IMO 7/10
