Don't forget to use spoiler tags - quite a few for this one won't access til later in the month when it starts.
I asked the mods to add a spoilers warning to the thread title, which it looks like they’ve just done. Thanks mods. I agree, people should still use the tags though, so it can be an open discussion thread.

Yeah I'm happy to wait a few weeks before going into any details. It's looking pretty promising so far. There was a bit of "yeah I can tell this was approved by the modern production team as that just didn't make much sense" but that's was a small minus point.I agree, people should still use the tags though, so it can be an open discussion thread.
I'm going to discuss some points from the first 2 episodes so if you don't want to spoil it for yourself, don't click.
Episode 1
We get to see Robert April, now an Admiral. Yes, he's black.
There has been a bit of consternation in the US over this from the usual crowd but so what?
Roddenberry appeared as April in a publicity shot and April was white in TAS but that's not considered canon.
This Enterprise obviously looks a lot more hi tech than the 60's version.
I don't care.
Lots of female bridge officers. Looks like Pike has got used to having a woman on the bridge.
T'Pring asks Spock to marry her. They were already betrothed as children though.
Also, both seem to be up for a bit of rumpy pumpy till disturbed,
Thought that only happened in Pon Farr.
Nurse Chappell is hot.
The Enterprise can now beam you down in uniform and you arrive dressed in local clothing
It can also beam hypospray contents down directly into your bloodstream
La'an Noonien Singh the security officer.
Giving off a bit of a grumpy Malcolm Reed vibe but as this is set after the Eugenics War, surely this name carries some baggage.
Is she a decedent of Khan? Just coincidence?
This would be like having someone called Hitler on your crew.
Kirk's older brother, Samuel Kirk shows up.
His entrance at the end totally reminded me of this
Good opener though
Episode 2
Pike has his Mojo back. Gone from a man tortured over visions of his future to a mega quiffed, super cool, one liner spouting Captain.
The Captains quarters are massive. Party on.
Mr Kyle is now Asian, not British. I don't get that. Why not just create a new character?
If Scotty shows up and he's now an Aborigine, I'll be annoyed.
I'm liking being back to the episode of the week format.

Can't argue with any of that really. Episode 1

Although having read about the origins of ST, I always knew "Robert April" as one of those early "we could call the captain this" kinda names, not an actual character. So rather than "hey, we're fleshing out THIS character!" like they've done with Pike, it feels more like they just appropriated a name most casual fans probably didn't know anyway and used it for a new character.
Had a real problem hearing half the dialogue last night - soundbar up, TV up...Dr Mbenga still mumbling. Have to work out where the subtitles button is and try it again I think. But less enamoured with this one - felt more like "new Trek script in old Trek clothes" rather than "taking the better bits of old Trek and updating them".

Dialogue sounded fine to me, including the doc.It was another exploration of the new crew. We learned a bit about No1, the doc, and La'an... the latter of which was a bit of an anti-climax. The story felt a bit thin overall.
The design/construction of the stage/sets is spectacular though.
The fact that I have only just watched episode 2 is a good sign. It's too good to just shoehorn in when you have a moment. I want to be sitting nice and comfortable with a mug of coco.
I thought the beaming of medication directly into the body was a bit much. There has to be some limits on what they can do.

While they're making the last season of Disco now, I think they should look at the fan reaction for SNW and throw in the towel, and stop wasting any more money.
What's funny is the creators of SNW - while enjoying the positive fan reaction to this, no doubt - can't see how they've done anything wrong with Disco either. At least publicly.
