Captain Phillips last night on Netflix.

Tom Hanks as a Maersk container ship captain who risks all by sailing through waters infested by Somali pirates, and soon reaps the consequences.

Based on a true story it's slow to get moving but genuinely gripping later on. Hanks, as usual, gives it his all, and the breakdown of the pirate group is very well done. It's a bit of a shame that following his family back home during the ordeal was cut for film length reasons.
Nominated for several Academy Awards and a good mid-week movie.

The scene at the end with the navy medic is brilliantly done.

Indeed - as usual after watching a film for the first time I had a good dig in IMDB and it turns out the medic was a real navy doctor. The first take was scrapped as she was so star-struck with TH, the second take she was asked to simply do what she does every time and it was spot on for accuracy. The director found the room a bit dusty... Excellent.

Yep, i knew that, one reason why it was so good.

On a similar sea high-jacking theme, the Danish A Hijacking (2012) is also very good.

Aterrados (Terrified)

Creepy argentinian horror film about a paranormal investigation in a street where there have been strange and deadly happenings.

The Foreigner

Blokes only surviving daughter gets killed in an IRA bombing, he goes looking for culprits, everyone underestimates the 60 year old Chinese immigrant until they discover he's a former special forces Vietnam veteran.

Sounds like formulaic Hollywood action movie but I love Jackie Chan and he's great as the grieving father and it's not got the slapstick of his younger films or the invulnerable superhero element of far too many action films.

I may have to dig out Drunken Master and Wheels on Meals for a bit of slapstick now though

Holidate 6/10
Generic-ish rom-com that does poke some fun at rom-com tropes. Pretty entertaining as rom-coms go, and both leads are easy on the eye.

Who's That Girl (1987) DVD

Quirky crim on early release ropes in aspiring brief as she causes chaos in NYC.

Garbage '80's Madge vehicle. Some shots of late '80's Harlem are interesting, destruction of a Rolls Corniche less so.

Surprisingly another spot of a US spec Capri in this one - second in a week after watching Elm St 3.

Knives Out.

Good fim but, Jesus, what was the point of Daniel Craig's southern US accent? It was awful! He would start a sentence in his London English accent then end it in the drawl of his character. laughlaugh
It is awful isn't it?

The film is OK, predictable ending with the route there 96% obvious. But that accent, just why?!

Switched it off halfway through, and I like Hanks. Found it dull and turgid.

I genuinely believe this to be the most entertaining film ever made.

I have no idea if I love it or hate it. If I love it, I have no idea why because I hate it. Which might be why I love it.

Oh lawd.

I saw it a couple of weeks ago, it starts good but then goes quite mental to a point where I'm no sure it was good anymore.

This week
Beetlejuice - still brilliant 8/10
Behind You - Run of the mill Demon possession film 5/10
The Invisible Man - New take on the Invisible man story but really well done 9/10
The Exorcist - Not aged well in a few places but still a classic 8/10

..........Yes, I think it is. I opened this comment to reply ‘I think I admire the quality of the craftsmanship but not the overall result’... ...but even in the time it took to type that, I’m already getting comfortable that the feeling that the film provoked was its intention therefore the result is itself good.

It reminds me of the experience I had with ‘under the skin’. I bloody loved that film.

It Follows (2014)

I took the recommendation from the horror thread. Standard teen movie fare, fairly idiotic premise but was nicely done.

Saw The Lighthouse earlier in the year, great film but tough going at times. IIRC all starts to go to pieces when they start drinking the ‘wick oil’.

I think I watched the st version on a different channel, I thought it was unintentionally hilarious.
