Sicario was directed by Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049, Arrival, Prisoners) who is one of the few really 'st hot Directors in Hollywood at the moment. It looks fantastic and really has a claustrophobic, tense feel to it so you can get a sense of how the Blunt character is feeling, out of her depth and purposely kept in the dark. She knows she's being exploited, but She doesn't know how or why, at the same time She really wants to get at the Cartel so she goes along with it.
If you haven't seen it, Soldado focuses on the Josh Brolin / Del Toro characters, Emily Blunt isn't in it.
It still focuses on the Mexican Cartels, but there's a Counter Terrorism element and it's a little more sensational and action-movie-like than the grittier, more grounded original. The Director mostly does TV crime dramas, like Gomorrah which I know a lot of people love, but I haven't seen. There's a lot more 'Tactical AF(r)' gun play and stuff like that.
It cost a more to make than Sicario, made less money and got more mediocre reviews. I can't see Sicario 3 being made, it's been 'in development' for 3 years now, they might make a cheaper film with just Del Toro as the only returning star, but I don't see them having the budget for a big budget film based on the performance of Soldado.

I am a big fan of the movie but "perfect casting" does rather overlook the fact that Emma Thompson looks like Kate Winslet's Mum rather than a slightly older sister. My sister, who is a big JA fan, won't watch this adaption for that reason.
I thought the BBC remake with Dominic Cooper was excellent.https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0847150/?ref_=nv_sr_s...

I enjoyed Soldado, but it's not as good.

And it had Roger Deakins behind the camera and the score was great. I think the composer pegged it early IIRC; pity as he had promiseSicario was directed by Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049, Arrival, Prisoners) who is one of the few really 'st hot Directors in Hollywood at the moment.

Bought the dvd at Christmas of The Man Who Would Be King and got around to watching it last night. It's based on a Rudyard Kipling book and the late Christopher Plummer plays Kipling and also stars Michael Caine and Sean Connery. I really enjoyed it and it's worth seeing 8/10.
It's on Film4 now.Could have saved yourself a tenner.

I suppose I am bit reluctant, despite the TV show being my favourite version of both P&P and Emma (1995 and 2009) because the 1995 S&S is so iconic. Strange casting choice aside I don't think it would be possible to adapt any of her books better in a film length of just over two hours.

Roman J Israel, Esq - Denzel Washington got an oscar nomination as a lawyer who finds himself working at a big firm and does the dirty on a client. Interesting enough that I sat through it in one go but a bit disappointing come the end - 6/10
I watched that when it was on the other week, similarly disappointed but I'm not quite sure exactly why.CooperD said:

That film is a solid 10 for me. Complete perfection of storytelling and cinematography. And Billy Fish is one of my favourite characters ever.Upgrade, on Film4 lastnight. I'm sure this was on Netflix/Prime but I can't see it now. Anyway, it's a good little film. The Film4 description on social said it's a mix of Terminator, RoboCop, Knight Rider, Venom, Ex Machina and Black Mirror. And yes it is . There's one scene earlier on with a character wearing a face mask being told he's not going to catch bird flu. Oh how the world has changed . Same director as The Invisible Man from last year, also recommended .

Empire of the Sun.
Time has taken it from an 8/10 to a 6/10 IMO.
Still a watchable film though
I think this may still be my favourite film. Takes three bars of the music for it to get dusty, just like Gallipoli. I watched it when I was the same age whilst away at boarding school so it resonated a little (yeah coz boarding school is just like a Japanese pow camp yo...). Time has taken it from an 8/10 to a 6/10 IMO.

I suppose it's a bit like your favourite music, doesn't have to be the best song, just something that hits you in the feelz.
Jeez, I haven't even started on the vino yet...

I saw that too, I must admit I lost interest towards the end. Pretty good most of the way through, though.Gassing Station | TV, Film, Video Streaming & Radio | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
