I went in not knowing what the story was, only the location and time.
Intense, gripping and very well done.
Not for the squeemish... Recommended.
Whilst I recognise the film for what it is (an attempt to help one of their squad to remember that day), I found it a bit slow and it didn't keep me interested. Maybe it's just not my thing.I went in not knowing what the story was, only the location and time.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Bluray disc
Incredibly slow-paced by modern standards but an absolutely seminal Sci-Fi film.
SFX of their time but mostly very effective. In fact at times you catch yourself thinking "How did they manage to do that with 1960's technology?"
I had forgotten how utterly dispassionate Dave Bowman is whilst deactivating Hal. Whilst lobotomising him. Apart from a brief look of empathy. Truly Keir Dullea nailed this role.
Proper Sunday afternoon viewing.
8 bones flying upwards / 10 spaceships coming down
edit: The last 30 mins of the film really could be cut though. I mean, yes, you need to show Bowman becoming the Star Child but it honestly could have been done more succinctly. It's been decades since I read the book but I seem to recall it was covered in a matter of pages.
A film I have never made it through in one sitting even though I do love it (and 2010). Does a 1968 film really need a spoiler tag though? Bluray disc

BROKEN TRAIL, with Robert Duvall
I just watched this, having bought it on BluRay. It's definitely no Lonesome Dove, although there are shades of Gus Macrae in Duvall's character, including some mannerisms (and the hat). As I say, no Lonesome Dove but a decent watch, given that we seem to be starved of decent Westerns. Based around a true story, apparently

The Heat
Have never been a fan of either Sandra Bullock or Melissa McCarthy, but this film really works with both of them.
Rough and coarse local cop has to work with a stuck up FBI agent to bust a drugs ring.
Quite a lot of LOL moments and really enjoyed it for an evenings entertainment.

Just Cause
90s thriller starring Sean Connery and Laurence Fishburne (and a very young Scarlett Johansson in only her second film role). Connery is a retired lawyer who specialises in opposing the death penalty who's dragged back to review the case of a man who claims to be wrongfully convicted.
This is on Netflix and I'd never seen it before, it's kind of a mix of Silence of the Lambs and Cape Fear. Ed Harris is fantastic as a serial killer and Fishburne plays the local cop on a small town role very well. The plot is a bit overly complicated IMO and i have to say I think Connery was miscast here. My biggest issue is the insane and obvious age gap between him and his wife, at the time she's 42 and he's 65. Not impossible but with a daughter around 11, it just really stands out in this film. It seems to be a result of needing to drive the plot along the lines they'd chosen but someone closer to her age could still have worked with minor tweaks.
Overall it's nothing to write home, Connery did The Rock right after this so it's interesting to see him in a role that wasn't such a hit and is a change of pace for him. It's on Netflix at the moment.

The Accountant 2
I can't believe how long ago the first film came out, I can't say I was desperate for a sequel as I thought the first one stood on its own very well but it was clearly a passion project.
I had alot of fun with this, predominantly due to Jon Bernthal and Afflecks chemistry together as brothers. I was unconvinced from the trailers and in all honesty the plot here felt needlessly complicated (but then again I don't really remember the plot of the first film too well), but I'd happily see a 3rd one of these if it was just those two camping in the woods together. They're brilliant on screen together and the dynamic works so well.
I'd say this exceeded my expectations and is a worthwhile watch if you enjoyed the first one.

If you're looking for another Connery film that is similar, have a look at Rising Sun (1993) co-starring Wesley Snipes, where Connery is an expert in Japanese studies and Snipes is an ignorant American cop, and they are investigating a murder in a Japanese corporate building, where Japanese etiquette is vital to solving the case. 90s thriller starring Sean Connery and Laurence Fishburne (and a very young Scarlett Johansson in only her second film role). Yes. Because this thread is "no spoilers".

There are plenty of older films that they may want to see and the last thing they need is someone spouting off details of the plot and especially plot twists. Same goes for old TV programmes. It's not hard!

I'm guessing it's less problematic than Connery's previous foray into Japanese culture in You Only Live Twice? Bonus is a cameo appearance of a Vector W8

Sounds good I'll seek it out.

Spiders on a Plane (2024)
I popped this on over the weekend and, well... what do you expect?
The plot doesn't really need explaining so let's not even bother. The visual effects are terrible, possibly intentionally (I hope not), but overall it's good fun and ticks along fine for the most part.
Some of the actors were actually pretty good - better than you might expect, and everyone seems on-board with the assignment. Pun intended, it feels appropriate.
I think they boarded that 747 that's been parked at Dunsfold for years, which was amusing since it clearly hasn't moved for ages and is half covered in moss. The take-off shots taken by holding the camera and running alongside the plane that was clearly on the ground also made me giggle.
Oh, one other note is that I had to look up the actress playing blonde flight attendant because she is the spitting image of Lucy Punch from Motherland / Amandaland, and it was really bothering me.
All in all, I really like that people make these kinds of films and I fully support their efforts.
6/10 for effort.

Wouldn’t say I enjoyed it, but then I don’t think you are supposed to.
Utterly futile, pointless; the action in the film changes nothing, no heroes, no point to it at all. Again this is what the filmmakers intended.
Well shot, good acting. Made by professionals on a tight/focused budget with expert input (by the chaps that this happened to in real life).
Would definitely recommend.
8,000 bullets out of 10,000 rounds.

Gladiator 2. Two in every way to the original. The lead is nowhere near as charismatic as Russell Crowe, the emperors - especially the ridiculous Prince Harry lookalike - aren't anywhere near as nasty and scheming as Joachin Phoenix, the special effects look more realistic in Sharknado - and speaking of sharks, those, the comedy rhino and other-world apes, did a blind man who'd never seen animals in real life come up with those? - the story is rubbish, especially as the lead goes from hating his mother to loving her and her husband, despite him killing his wife, in about ten seconds, the fights and battles are poorly choreographed and Denzel Washington is his typical smirking self, acting exactly the same as every other role he's ever had. And why is the film seemingly mainly about him? Perhaps that's why he agreed to do it. Tim McInnerny is basically Percy from Blackadder in a different costume.
