Films I watched this week (NO SPOILERS) (Vol 3)
Discussion
Zombieland: Double Tap - good fun sequel, can't belive it was ten years between the two!
Read that Michael Cera turned down a part which is a shame as he would have been perfect, but understandable as Jesse Eisenberg seemed to take every role that would have suited him for a good few years.
Anyway 4/5

Bought some active 3D glasses for my Epson projector, thought I'd give it a go (10 years late, I know!)
Last film I saw in 3D was Jaws 3D in 1983, so expectations were low.
First up, Tron Legacy. WOW! The film isn't great but it looks amazeballs. Really astonishing.
I've downloaded the top 20 3D films to work my way through... but I'd welcome any recommendations.

The one that works best (ok, I might be biased as it is one of my favorite movies anyhow, but in never fails to get a big WOW on the big screen) is Hugo.

On Amazon Sub-Prime: end of my free month.
The Brass Teapot - some King Midas style moral tosh. Abysmal. 1/10
Chokeslam - a small town shortass tries to re-pull some tall wrestling goddess. Abysmal. 1/10
Bad Asses 2: I have a very vague recollection of the original but this was fairly abysmal. 2/10
Miss Meadows: Horrifically twee Snow White meets assassin guff with too many shades of Jimmy Savile. Turned it off after maybe 20 minutes.
Sorry but that's saved you watching them.

Bloodshot.
I kinda like Vin Diesel , he picks his roles carefully IMO.
But please..... we haven't used 1970's black cabs for years down in the Smoke

And I’m being generous.
They were handing out t shirts at the showing he went to. Can't wear it on the video if the movie is good, because promotion. "OK, I'll only wear the shirt if it sucks"...
The Irishman.
A superb Scorsese gangster / mob movie in the vein of Good Fellas. With Robert De Niro as the titular Irishman and mob hitman, now in a care home looking back over his life.
Joe Pesci as his mentor and as union leader Jimmy Hoffa, Al Pacino. All superb. I rarely sit through a film in one go but could not leave this one until the credits rolled.

The Personal History of David Copperfield
Well, quite honestly it won't be everyone's cup of char, but a wonderful movie. I'd say Ianucci has written a love letter to Dickens with this.
Excellent, excellent performances from the likes of Patel, Capaldi, Laurie, Wishaw et al into a re-imagining of the entire era and cadre of Dickensian fiction. Well directed, well filmed - although surprisingly bright in places compared to how you are imaging the grimy underbelly of society that Dickens would conjure.... but nonetheless quite good for it.
Gentle humour rather than too much belly laughing, and not a full on "Thick-Loop-Stalin" Ianucci, but a much more mellow and thoughtful one.
Well worth a put-yer-feet-up-and-ingest movie. 8.5 stray donkeys out of 10 charlatans and debtors

I might have to check this out. The Death of Stalin is a film that grew on me with repeated viewing and which I now really love, so maybe I might like this. Serenity (2019)
Now this really did not get good reviews... perhaps because people were expecting a more conventional film, when, without giving too much away, it is actually not quite as straightforward. But I rather like bonkers plot twists etc, stuff that gets you thinking, and am willing and able to suspend my disbelief - so I really didn't see what the problem was and enjoyed it

Just got in from the cinema as they're re-screening it for its 40th anniversary.
Still an excellent yarn.
Long movie at just over two hours but I enjoyed my private viewing. (Support your localGunfighter cinema - if you're still able to)

Out of interest were they showing the (I think) 1997 re-mastered version or the original cinema release (if that's even possible anymore)?Just got in from the cinema as they're re-screening it for its 40th anniversary.
Still an excellent yarn.

Poor remake, they missed out some key plot points from the 2005 original Now this really did not get good reviews... perhaps because people were expecting a more conventional film, when, without giving too much away, it is actually not quite as straightforward. The Invisible Man (2020)
Just missed this in the cinema prior to lockdown so waited for it to reduce from a £16 rental to a far more reasonable £1.99.
Very solid movie, the concept is brought up to date nicely and whilst I feel more could have been made of it, it's approx 800 times better than the one and only other movie in the 'dark universe' (The Mummy). Genuinely tense at times and Elisabeth Moss is, as always, excellent.

Rewatched "The Next Three Days" with Russell Crowe and Elizabeth Banks, having first seen it not long after its release in 2010. It's on Amazon Prime at the moment. A
A good thriller that has stood the test of time reasonably well and strikes just about the right balance between entertainment and a level of plausibility, in my opinion. Well made, typical good performance from Russell Crowe playing the slightly grumpy main character, and not as entirely predictable as some films in this genre.
If you're a fan of films about justice and plotting escapes from it, it's well worth a watch.

Road House yet again. Honestly, I never tire of this film.
Fights, drinking, hot doctor, bimbo with big knockers, cars, more fights, classic lines, fat bloke, explosions and a plain Jane who brings doughnuts.
If I could only ever watch one film again it would be this.
10/10 all day, every day.
Not seen that before so gave it a go. It was enjoyable for 80% then completely jumped the shark. That seemed to be the norm back in the 80's. for this kind of film Fights, drinking, hot doctor, bimbo with big knockers, cars, more fights, classic lines, fat bloke, explosions and a plain Jane who brings doughnuts.
