Hadn’t watched this for probably 20 years - forgot just how good it is! Jean Reno playing his part really well and a fantastic show by Gary Oldman.
Gary Oldman is great in whatever he does. He has such a range and can transform into anyone.
Psycho cop in Leon
Pimp in True Romance
Sirius Black in Harry Potter
Zorg in The Fifth Element
Dracula

Not sat down to watch a film in months. Has anything decent been released recently?

Bullet Train - foolish brain out nonsense, actually quite enjoyable but the English tough guys missed the mark for me.

I found it a bit meh to be honest. Very predictable from the start. I can't try and write a synopsis because that would be the whole script in one line.

2/10

Three Thousand Years Of Longing

This was a bit different from what I expected, and all the better for it. Idris Elba is a genie who Tilda Swinton releases from the bottle. Then we get his life story which was actually OK if not amazing. Great visuals.

7/10

Bandit

Biopic of a prolific bank robber which didn't hold my attention beyond the first half.

Bullet Train

I was looking forward to this and while it was fun, it didn't quite hit the mark for me. It's like someone was trying to copy Guy Ritchie or Tarantino but hasn't captured the essence of what makes their films so good.

It's one of those that I watched all the way through but it doesn't bear repeat viewings.

Russian assassin come supermodel tries to find a way out of the KGB.
It's been done before but Luc Besson is the master of this kind of film in my opinion. The story is told by something happening, and then you get a "6 months earlier" segment explaining the background, meaning you get a few plot twists that weren't obvious. Plus Helen Mirren was as good a ever as a senior KGB officer.

Bullet Train

Poundland Guy Ritchie, Poundland John Wick. Turned it off half way through as I realised I didn't care about any of the characters or what happened next.

2/10

I watched this after I turned off Bullet Train. Wasn't the most high-brow example of its genre but it kept me quite gripped.

7/10

Elvis

A complete assault on the senses without much attention paid to the finer points, but it's a Baz Luhrmann film so what do you expect? Flashy and entertaining enough to allow me to hold on for its rather inflated runtime, and had great audio.

5/10.

Licorice Pizza

Great 70s details but as boring as fk. Two debut actors as the leads and both of them were terrible, no chemistry whatsoever which made a pretty flimsy plot unwatchable. Couldn't even finish it.

1/10

P.S. 2nd recently nominated Best Film Oscar movie I have tried and failed to watch all the way through. I think Top Gun:Maverick has ruined me for other films.

Prey.
Got about 3/4 way through it, not sure I'll bother watching the end tbh.
Not very many Arnies out of 10.

He was only a young man but he made a football hooligan film thing in the 80s.
It was superb as was he in it.

For reasons I won't bore anyone with, a few days ago I had to sit through Crazy, Stupid, Love, streaming on Prime. Julianne Moore, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, and Steve Carell.

It's a series of set pieces, but not the weaker for all that.

The script has a precision that's awe-inspiring and most of the cast deliver it perfectly. There's a seduction scene with Gosling and Stone (they get paid for it as well). The pair delivered on the script perfectly. The comment when she sees Gosling's physique had me laughing. I won't spoil it.

There's a farce towards the end; a domestic fight. It's brilliant.

Carell, the star, had some brilliant scenes, and didn't he do them well.

There are one or two missteps, and one might suggest it was predictable, but you can't hold that against it. Well worth watching. It's gentle, takes little mental effort, is great fun and it has Emma Stone in it.

(Stupid title)

Aside from the fact that I don't know who Emma Stone is (despite googling her), you have me sold. I like the idea of "Well worth watching" and "It's gentle, takes little mental effort, is great fun"

I shall add it to my Watch List

Let me know what you think.

Re: Emma Stone, I think I'm confusing her with Rachel McAdams as to what she's been in before. Emma is La La Land and not Spotlight or Notebook.

My age. I get confused easily.

The Next Three Days (Netflix)

Enjoyable thriller with 2+ hours of Russell Crowe, 10 minutes of Mrs Sting and about 5 minutes of Liam Neeson.

I am amazed you don't know Emma Stone, she is incredibly mainstream and has been in some great films. Gorgeous woman too IMHO.

The film Derek mentions is great.
