Gravity
Was on telly last night so I thought I’d give it a rewatch. Always left wondering how the fk did NASA allow such a flake go into space? A damaged character who clearly went on a weekend astronaut course before liftoff who has to reach for the manual before doing anything.
Love the random pushing button in the Chinese ‘Soyuz’ and manages to launch the damn thing.
Visually excellent though.

Couple of things that get me is when she's caught in the ropes and she's holding onto the rope which Clooney is tethered to.
Why does he detach himself to save her.
All she needed to do was give the rope a tug and he would have drifted back in her direction but there's some force that's pulling him out.
Also shouldn't that same force pull her into deep space when she was spinning about after detaching from the arm at the start, must have been spinning and drifting out for about 10 minutes before Clooney came and got her.
Based on recommendations from this thread I've watched Upgrade (passed the time amusingly) and Taxi (which I liked but m'lady didn't) this week.
I also finally watched Once Upon a Time in America. Fabulous cinematic achievement, but it's dated badly from a "tomato ketchup blood" perspective. Had to watch in instalments, given length and dodgy wifi signal, but overall worth the time investment.
Covid-related unemployment has given me more viewing time than I've ever had, so I'm grateful to this thread for highlighting more than just what can see on the Prime & Netflix home pages.
Lady Bird is on iPlayer at the moment, btw, and is a fabulous movie.

Black Rain (1989)
Tipped earlier on this thread, just superb.
Lost in Translation is one of my absolute favourites, but this is an 80s classic, it also helps if you’ve visited. I spent quite some time over there on business pre COVID.
Even now Andy Garcia’s death is shocking.

It started when I was 12 and paid to see this at the cinema and left after 15 minutes because it was so boring. Over the ensuing 40 odd years, I have repeatedly tried to watch it but always turn it off, it is that dull and boring. Tried again today, switched back to 007...LuS1fer said:

It's all about the build up of atmosphere of the event. It's not meant to be an all out action movie. You'll never get it as you don't allow yourself to. Hancock on Netflix today. Went in with no preconceptions, really quite enjoyed it. An alternative take on being a superhero, Will Smith having fun, and Charlize Theron...
Leaves everything open for a sequel, which has apparently been in Development Hell for some time.
Better than the average. 8/10

The Railway Man was on the BBC on Friday night. Based on the true story of Eric Lomax and his experience as a POW building the Burma railway and his difficulty in dealing with the experience after the war. Stars Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman. Despite having seen it a few times before, I still enjoyed it.
Worth seeking it out on iPlayer, if you haven't seen it for a while.
Just watched this. Quite brilliant and moving at the same time. Highly recommended.Worth seeking it out on iPlayer, if you haven't seen it for a while.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8850222
Peninsula takes place four years after the zombie outbreak in Train to Busan. The Korean peninsula is devastated and Jung Seok, a former soldier who has managed to escape overseas, is given a mission to go back and unexpectedly meets survivors
Sequels are rarely as good as the original and that is sadly the case here, a pale imitation of it's former self.
Still kind of enjoyed it but don't think I would want to watch it again

Reign of Fire
Somehow this beautifully daft film has passed me by for 18 years. Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale trying to keep a straight face while fighting dragons in the far future of 2020. With a bit of Izabella Scorupco thrown in the mix and a brief appearance by Alice Krige (the Borg queen).
Silly, and surprisingly accomplished visually.
The dragons have it. 7/10
