The Talented Mr Ripley. Had forgotten what a great movie this is.
Agreed.
But Patricia Highsmith preferred the French Alain Delon version 'Plein Soleil'. So do I.
Thirded!
Never seen the Alain Delon one though. I may see if a version is available on the tube. I'm sure i actually remember Delon being in a lot of films on channel 4 when i was youngster.

My comment about the alternative version* was prompted by a Sky documentary only last week on the bio of Alain Delon and his Ripley was thought to have been one of his best.

Will admit that caused me to indulge in his classic Le Samourai where he plays a hit man active in the Paris underworld.
Was there anybody more cool in his grey fedora and black coat at the time. A dialogue with few words and much said with a piercing look.
Top movie if you can catch it.

  • I bought a box set of his movies so a rare treat.

I saw some of you comparing Interstellar to 2001 a Space Odyssey and while it's a very well made movie I really don't think it comes close to Kubrick's flawed masterpiece. However despite its ground -breaking special effects and very intriguing storyline I have always found 2001 a rather uneven watch. Majestic and cerebral yes, but also somewhat surreal and annoying.

To my mind its sequel 2010 Odyssey 2 helmed by Richard Hyams is a far far better film than either of the above. It has all the majesty of 2001 - all the scale and wonder at the universe but manages to package it into a far better and more compelling storyline. To me, it might actually be the greatest science fiction movie ever made. The fact that hardly anybody has ever heard of it makes its rewards all the richer!! My bluray copy on my 7.1 surround sound home theatre system with its projection screen has reduced me to tears on more than one occasion. This is a movie that amply rewards you turning the volume up!! Everybody I have ever shown this film to has been utterly bowled over by it...

Enjoy - this will probably be the best movie you will ever watch that you have never heard of!

2010 is indeed a great movie, and vastly under rated. My only question is, when can I have dolphins in my living room?

I've said before that Hugh Grant is incredibly good value in this.

Watched Jungle Cruise yesterday - not very PH, I know.

I enjoyed it. It's Dwayne Johnson as the only character he ever plays (surprisingly didn't get his shirt off, though.) And Emily Blunt / Jack Whitehall as the textbook quintessential posh English brother & sister. (The Mummy, anyone?)

Derives heavily from the ride of the same name - plenty of action and over the top sequences, some moderate humour thrown in. Good chemistry between DJ / EB adds a little to it. Didn't expect much from JW as he isn't really known for his acting prowess but he was remarkably charming.

Worth a watch if you require a mindless two hours and don't take life too seriously.

Greed (2019) Blu-ray

Pride before a fall as retail "entrepreneur", mired in Parliamentary enquiry celebrates his 60th with a typlcally puff-party.

Entertaining mirror to recent real-life retail shenanigans. Steve Coogan suitably punchable as the lead, good supporting cast & a cameo from a S1 Esprit. Need 15-20 mins cut out of the running time.

Buffalo Soldiers (2001) DVD

U.S. Army Supply Specialist tea-leaf finds new in-house adversaries to his racket during the closing days of the Cold War in Germany.

While since I've watched this, still pretty good; particularly the stoned tankers scene.

BBC stuck Operation Avalanch on the other week. Interesting and sometimes funny.
Gets you thinking. I now wonder how they managed to send a broadcast camera to the moon and send back live pictures in 1969.
Meanwhile at the same time on earth you needed a van full of kit to do live broadcasts.

Saw this on Amazon and as I loosely knew the story gave it a watch.

Very disturbing what some of the more suggestible people are capable of and the impact of authority on us all.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compliance_(film)

Compliance is a 2012 American thriller film written and directed by Craig Zobel, based upon a strip search phone call scam that took place in Mount Washington, Kentucky, in which the caller, posing as a police officer, convinced a restaurant manager to carry out unlawful and intrusive procedures on an employee.

Aftermath - 2021

No not the Arnie film where the negligent ATC crashes a plane.

Saw this on Netflix.

Married couple trying to work things out after the wife has had an affair.
Husband is a crime scene clean up guy, after cleaning up a particular couples murder suicide, he decides to buy the murder house on the cheap so he and his wife can start afresh.

Not long after they move in, they start to experience weird things happening in the house and to them personally.

Enjoyable enough suspense/horror movie and tries to keep you guessing till the end, however could have been a touch shorter.

Apparently based on true events.

Jolt on Prime

It is pretty terrible. Considering the acting chops available, the best scene is with a young goth nerd. I can see what it wanted to be. But it fails.

Avoid.

Suicide Squad 2021

Honestly, I know its silly but damn I enjoyed it

Very violent, a lot better than the first and some genuinely chucklesome moments.

The Suicide Squad

The first one was OK, not great, but OK. This one was more of the same but with some good humour thrown-in. Better but still not great.

Jungle Cruise

Surprisingly watchable given the minimal source material from which they carved out a passable story, and the fact that it stars DJ who, despite being a real life action figure, has actually become quite watchable thanks to him having some depth and a sense of humour.

And Emily Brunt who is always quite lovely but also makes for a believable action character.

We all like different things. I thought it was pretty lame. A bonus point for Harley Quinn (better in this than the Harley Quinn film) but the rest was pretty dire. 3/10

I watched The Spy Who Dumped Me this afternoon.

I laughed more than I probably should have.

Bit disappointed that the 'nudity' warning was for Dustin Demri-Burns' body-double's knob.

Still; the movie probably deserves a trophy.

Went to see Stillwater last night, it’s about 2 hrs20mins too long. Slow start not much in the middle and a long drawn out ending. Don’t bother. 1 Matt Damon out of 10 Jason Bournes.

Revisited Train to Busan (recorded off ch4 yonks ago) earlier this evening with my daughter who is now of an age to find zombies funny rather than scary. We're also going on the train tomorrow biggrin

It's still a cracking film and still very Korean in its story telling. Woo-sik Choi as is great as you'd expect and I still have a soft spot for Yu-mi Jung.

I'm going to give it a genre score of 9/10, maybe a 7.9/10 overall. Definitely worth a watch if you haven't seen it.
