That's another thing I really like about the films, they never explicitly state if there is other intelligent life in the universe. Bug hunt could be taken to mean they have experience in fighting other hostile creatures, or just a synonym for another seemingly pointless easy mission. Same with the line about the other colonists they encountered, maybe they weren't human, maybe it's a joke about them just being simple and backwards.
There's a book detailing that very mission - I forget the title.

there was so much that could have been done with that universe , even after Alien 3 - but all we got from Ridley was the continual "ragtag ship of idiots landing on a planet and exploring and getting lost......." sigh

This really gets to the nub of my issues with the prequals.

Alien was set later but the crew was basically the equivalent of 'space' truck drivers so their mistakes, greed and panic are forgivable.

Most of the stuff that the crew of the Prometheus and Covenant do is just really stupid considering they are supposed to be the best and brightest.

'We want to explore these ruins but there is a dust storm coming, the captain says no but lets go anyway and get caught in it'

'Look at me I'm a biologist. Looks like a cobra, sounds like a cobra, i'm going to try and touch it'

'No human has ever been on this planet before but the air is breathable so we should all take our helmets off'

Arguably that's a pragmatic thing to do for the longevity of her hive - knowing the flamethrower would do her offspring no favours, and the Xeno species seemingly being all about aggressively maintaining itself.

When the flamethrower is eventually used, the queens reaction certainly demonstrates her anger.

Personally I think the queen was a master stroke. Proper beastie.

Too true. I really liked both of the prequels, but yes most of the films specialists are all very stupid.

I can’t disagree with that. The individual aliens get slightly downgraded as a threat from the terrifying single Xeno in Alien, but then the Queen is like the final boss.
And without the Queen, we wouldn’t have had one of the most iconic moments in ‘80s cinema...

I always saw it as showing she was the one in charge, and smart enough not to just mindlessly attack.

Such a great era for movies of this ilk. Alien/s, predator, Total recall, The Abyss, The Thing, etc. The best era.

Igree, and for the principal reason that films were allowed to breath... That is, slowly and deliberately build the tension.

It must be getting on for an hour before you see an alien in aliens.

The marines had a conversation about shagging aliens, though didn't mention if it was intelligent.

Private Frost : Hey, I sure wouldn't mind getting some more of that Arcturian poontang! Remember that time?

Private Spunkmeyer : Yeah, Frost, but the one that you had was a male!

Private Frost : It doesn't matter when it's Arcturian, baby!

The first dropship is named 'Bug Stomper'.

Doesn't mean it's literal though, the military use all sorts of symbolic or dramatic names for their machinery and units.

I’d love to see an Aliens prequel (stick with me here) telling story of the colony from when the sleezy company guy who deals with Ripley (Burke?) first tells the prospectors to go look at the grid coordinates where the alien ship is through to their last stand and them being over-run. I guess we know how it starts and how it ends but would still be a good story.

I know, I was agreeing with you first time around and Bug Stomper was another example. Letting the viewer decide their own interpretation rather than having everything spelt out and explained to you.

Think it worked for Rogue One, not so much here.
Show a couple of experiments, st gets out of hand , no weapons so fashion a few out of what they have, decide to barricade themselves in as a last stand and the Aliens still get in and take everyone to the cooling tower.

End story.

Not enough to work with for a full feature imo, maybe as a short.
